She has no actual evidence. People just mention that “everyone” uses Chat GPT for the online test they just had, etc. People have told her the prof in that class knows but does not know how to fix it. I feel like they have this honor code but it is a bit of a smokescreen. It’s my understand kids who cheat get a 0 on the exam and have to write an apology letter. It does not sound like kids are getting expelled. They just get perfect GPAs and get into McIntire and Batton.

What kind of test is this...and isn't an easy way to fix it to make everyone take the test in-person and not online?

Financial Accounting. Over 700 kids and it is an online class with online tests.

My kid reports everyone cheats in this class as well. My kid does not and probably will get a lower grade which will go against them for McIntire (which I believe influences the cheating culture since it is so competitive to get in)

I teach college, and we have more cheating than ever going on now. But there are two other things that are different. I see a lot more 'grey area' stuff that's on the edge of cheating but not quite there (students recycling their own work, for example, which technically is disallowed if it's a whole assignment - but what if it's only part of it?). I also see a lot less remorse. They may be angry that they're having to serve the consequences, but they don't necessarily see themselves as having done much of anything wrong.

My daughter reports back from college at UVA that everyone cheats, all the time. I feel like she is trying to get me to say it’s ok, which I refuse to do. When I was at UVA in the 80s NOBODY I knew ever cheated. People took the honor code seriously. There was a group of kids who had a study group who I often suspected may have but I never had any proof. If it went on, it was not widespread.

I don't completely disagree with you but everyone knows that anyone can essentially purchase a "legitimate diagnosis" from a "qualified professional."

Unfortunately, there are quite a few kids that pay for the diagnosis.

There needs to be a better way to make it harder for the fraudsters.

I still don’t get it. Doesn’t UVA have lecture halls that sit hundreds of kids? Can’t they break the class into two groups (can’t be too hard to create two Financial Accounting midterms) and have them take the class in person?

Why is the class only offered online?

A huge percentage of UVA students hail from the DC area. Many are children of government employees. Is there any wonder why lying and cheating are so prevalent in Charlottesville?

If she's a first year, she probably doesn't know yet that first year cheating rings got caught last year and people were held accountable.

You need to address her attitude immediately before she gets swept up in this. The professors with the big classes of first years know what's going on and set traps. She's going to get caught.

They used to be. I think they’re moving away from enforcement of that.
