Why is Cornell called "lower Ivy"

Your views are irrelevant.

Same to you.

Cornell University is better suited for the Big Ten Conference and Northwestern would be more comfortable in the Ivy League.

One has a school of agriculture and the other does not.

One hires its presidents from the Big Ten and the other does not.

One has ice hockey and the other doesn't.

Sometimes nature has a sense of humor and sometimes it doesn't. In this case, it does.

I would never use that expression IRL. It’s implicitly understood among those in the know, so no need to be so explicit.

I do hiring and absolutely do not view these schools equally.

Do tell...please tell me how you evaluate potential employees from Ivy's? What about potential employees from large public flagship schools? Please be specific on how you "hire" candidates!

We evaluate all candidates based on multiple criteria, including core content knowledge from their major, relevant to the job, and real world problem solving skills. The assessment doesn’t change based on school. However, based on past performance focus hiring on certain schools.

Northwestern hired its current President from Oregon, which is moving to the Big Ten next year (although it will be just about at the bottom there academically).

Part of the Ivies’ cachet is that they are old & established…they were all founded in the 1600s or 1700s…..except for Cornell, which was founded almost 100 years after the youngest of the others.

Also, many (or all) of the others began as religious schools, whereas Cornell started off as a school to study a wide variety of (often practical) things.

Not gonna get into the hair splitting - went to Cornell 3 decades ago - had class of < 20 people with Carl Sagan, met the smartest dude I have every met even to this day- a true genius, made lifelong friends and was embraced by a top tier Wall Street firm - one that still prizes Cornell grads. From what I see at alum events, the institution moves from strength to strength. There are many great schools, all I know is you will get a great education at Cornell and will have a lot of doors open to you (I feel bad for the Cornell trolls - if you can’t work a Cornell degree in the real world, you are the problem).

Also they hired the president of Wisconsin prior to this one. She tragically died of cancer before she could start. Cornell had past presidents/provosts from Michigan. Then again so did Dartmouth, Columbia, MIT, and heaven forbid, Princeton.

I love these lofty pronouncements by posters claiming to "do hiring" about who they would and wouldn't hire. Such utter BS that is beyond transparent.

"Those in the know" - snort. How insufferable.
