DP. Not to mention the fact that ALL drugs have side effects. Have you ever seen a drug commercial that didn't have a page of text at the bottom warning you of all the horrible things that might happen to you if you take it? This is why having information is good, if they know a drug causes suicidal ideation they can monitor the patient when they start taking it and get them off it it happens. And still use the drug in the rest of the population who might benefit. All medical interventions are cost benefit but the cost of doing nothing is ALSO a cost. This is especially true for this population. You don't tell a cancer patient about how bad chemo is for them. - someone who lost weight 'the right way' before these drugs came out but who would have taken them in a heartbeat and who will if I ever regain the weight...obesity is the medical struggle of our generation and I for one and thrilled we're making progress |
Birth control pills and Accutane both have side effects that include depression, but they can still be extremely helpful for many people. It's good to study these things. The fact they're studying it doesn't mean anything negative, nor would finding a link necessarily mean the drug isn't appropriate for many/most who are eligible. |
It’s a valid theory. Just weight loss on its own can cause depression, regardless of the method. Rapid weight loss can change hormones so quickly that it causes mental changes. And it is a thing that people think losing weight is going to solve all of their problems, and when it doesn’t they feel depressed. That might not be everyone’s experience, obviously, but just because people point out possible problems with the medication doesn’t mean they hate it. |
NP, and it's a valid theory, and could be concerning. The most successful people I know regarding weightloss and maintenance, are people who've developed a regular exercise regimen - precisely because they've redirected emotional eating with a healthier emotional outlet. People are obese for only a few reasons. 1) They grew up in families with poor eating habits and don't know better, 2) they're eating to fulfill an emotional need (often unaware). Very, very, very few people are obese because they have a true metabolic disorder. If you take a drug for weightloss and don't deal with the mental/emotional stuff (or redirect it with a healthy outlet), it doesn't go away. And yes, I've personally been on all sides of this coin. |
NP. I know these drugs are LUCRATIVE, seems there is some PR push back by Big Pharma. It will be interesting to see the results of the review. These silly tactics just seem astroturfy. |
These risks are already outlined in the Wegovy literature. Like any drug, there are risks; you just have to be mindful of them. |
I took phentermine for about 6 weeks and it made me irritable and bite my nails! |
I guess most of the people I know (myself included) are those few percent! |
I am on Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and have experienced suicidal thoughts. I’m actually really glad to see this article because I’m normally a very upbeat person and this came out of left field. It happened when I upped to the 2mg dose and lasted about three weeks. Much better now but I’ve actually experienced exactly this. Thanks to OP for sharing the article. |
Possible. But not that likely. |
It’s a plainly idiotic theory. Seriously, when did we start entertaining the ramblings of the scientifically illiterate so much in this society? Dumb theories should be laughed at and tossed, not considered because someone threw together an incoherent stream of words. |
Hit a nerve? |
Gosh you are ignorant. Stop advertising your lack of scientific understanding. |
Well, yes. I hate stupidity. You got me there. |
You are welcome to ignore it. That’s the very definition of not entertaining it. The opposite is shouting people down. We have seen how effective that is recently. |
