All I do is walk

Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions. I’m 5’6” and 177 lbs, weight has been creeping up over the years while I balance an office job and 2 elementary school aged kids.

I pretty much only walk too. But really need to strength train. I have added a weighted vest to my walks - started at 6 lbs and now up to 12 - and do squats and lunges on my walks, and now take off the vest and use it for arm exercises while I walk. I like that I don't have to add another chunk of time to working out. I started off slowly (just walking with the vest at first), before building up to more exercises. I do notice a difference in my body, and have lost 7 lbs (in six months).

NP here. I’m following this post and have to ask, have you found really good walking shoes and if so any suggestions for those that hate wearing socks?

I was walking 8-10K steps a day consistently, reducing calorie intake, drinking more water and getting good sleep and losing weight (lost 10 pounds) but fell off/life got in the way. Not that I need excuses to put off restarting again but I was getting pretty bad callouses/corns along the side of my foot, that over time had become painful. Any sustained exercise will require better footwear - shoes that I found comfortable aren’t great for serious walking and walking shoes with socks have been uncomfortable so I have to really psych myself up the way you do if you don’t wear heels and put them on for a special occasion reminding yourself you only have to get thru x amount of time until you can take them off.

Soooo… not walking. Diet.

I walk 8-10k steps a day also. I wear Hokas. 1/2 size bigger than my regular shoes. They aren't at all attractive, but they offer good support. Having suffered from plantar fascitis in the past, I just don't want to risk any injuries.

OP, everyone is different, but my weight loss progress from mid-spring through now is a combo of 8-10K steps/day as well as cutting back on consumption, especially snacking due to boredom. I haven't eliminated alcohol or sugar, but I limit my daily intake of them (well, that was never an issue with alcohol as I have one drink at most when I do have one). I also haven't eliminated carbs, but try not to consume too many or unnecessary ones (no, I don't need that slice of bread while waiting for our food order to arrive).

I've lost ~15 pounds over nearly two months. I've stalled out a bit over the last 10 days, so am trying to change things up to get over the next hump. Ideally I will lose another 15, but even 10 would be amazing for me given where I was earlier this year.

OP, good luck!

Increase your walking to 20,000 steps a day. That’s 10 miles. Stop breakfast. Your body gets used to it after a few weeks. Don’t snack and if you can’t resist, fill up with low calorie filler stuff. Pretzel sticks for example are like 25 for 100 calories.

Are you like my mom? “I walk 2 miles a day and do small group training 3 days a week. I also eat out a TON”

Op, if your goal is to get into better shape stick with what you are currently doing and add strength Training. Start with what you can and build to 4 xs per week. Lots a great free programs on YouTube. Check out Caroline Girvan, Sydney Cummings or Nourish, Move, love. Oh, and increase your protein. Good luck!

I’ve lost over 100 pounds on WW with zero exercise. It’s about the food. You can walk to Canada and it won’t matter. It’s about the food. I was over 300 pounds and exercise physically hurt, so I focused on what I could, the food. Now that I’m down 100 pounds and exercise isn’t physically painful, I’m going to add exercise to my routine.

Lift weights. It’s the fountain of youth.

PP here. Thank you for the suggestion.

I don’t feel like 10k is really many steps. I get up to 8k a day without effort, just living my life. It certainly doesn’t cause me to break a sweat.

I’ve lost 23lbs in the last 3 months by restricting calories

Both diet and exercise are important.

It's easy to overlook things in your diet that are adding weight, so be brutally honest and thorough in your analysis of what you're eating. Look at every single list of ingredients for everything you eat. Cut down on saturated fats especially--keep it to the RDA at a maximum.

When possible, make walking/cycling your mode of transportation for anyplace you have to go that's under 5 miles. I've done this for years and have kept the weight off.
