Affirmative Action and UVA

And yes as PP said, UVA has been very open for years that they are looking for geographic diversity.

Except plaintiffs have already sued TJHSS for mimicking the University of Texas's admission standard of taking the top portion of each feeder school. Looks like it will end up at the Supreme Court.

So yeah, they are coming for any initiative that tries to increase "diversity."

If he looks statistically Asian (CS major from NOVA with 80 AP exams), harder.

If he looks statistically like a good ol’ boy (rural high school in a red county), easier.

But the good ol boy from rural VA is still from a family paying Virginia taxes to support UVA. If the good ol boy in the top 10% of his high school, he should be getting into UVA. He shouldn’t be compared against the NOVA kid.

Yes, it sucks to think that someone with a gasp "lower gpa and lower sat" might get in over your kid. But you have to understand that given the kids background/educational situation, they are the "top students" given their situation. Admitting them to college gives them the opportunity to thrive in much better environment. If you don't get that, you need to step back from your privileged life

UVA is majority White and Asian. There are only 6% Blacks and 6% Hispanics. Your white son will do just fine just like all the other white men in this country who have been doing great for the past few centuries.

Just say it's majority White. Asians only comprise of 15% of the whole student body.

Which is more than 2x their proportion of the population nationally and statewide.

Exactly. And blacks are only 28% of the nation.

Libidiots always leave these pieces of math out.

Fourteen percent.

If they want to dumb down their school and sink to the lowest common denominator, go right ahead. We saw what happened to our public school system when they refused to teach any new material during Covid because it would be inequitable to much smaller number of kids without access to home internet. They still haven't come out of the hole from that one.

I bet much harder if you’re from northern Virginia. Zip codes with low average salaries are going to be the new hook.

This.

White kids in nova are gonna have an even harder time getting into uva post scotus

THe top 10% of any NOVA school doesn't get into UVA, it's the top 3% at best.

Depends on the high school.

If you compare the demographics of the state, University of Virginia has about the same or slightly fewer White students than you would expect based on state demographics, nearly double the Asian students you would expect based on state demographics, and only 1/2 of the Black population you would expect. So for all the memorials to the enslaved people who built the universities and gave labor to the founders of the universities and currently pay state taxes that help support the universities, only half as many Black students as there are proportionately in the state get to attend the flagship university.

Quite a few unhooked white/Asian UMC students below the top 3% (but not below the top 10%) of our FCPS high school got into UVA for this fall's entering class.

I am not happy with the SC decision, however I was thinking UVA will most likely have a difficult time to ever match the % of Black students to their population in the state. How many top Black students choose HBCU’s over UVA? How many Black students do not want to attend a “Southern” university? How many Black students are discouraged from even applying to UVA?

It would be ironick if and kind of awesome if this ruling actually causes the end of secondary school segregation as striver parents rush to move in bounds to high minority/high FARMS rates schools

My kidd attend one of those “less desired” high schools. Looking forward to my property value going up!!!! Might be time to invest in one of the old beat up ramblers a few blocks from our house!

Let's see how much they go dumbing down.

They'll fill useless majors with the dumbing downs.

Those jokes will be out on their a**es soon enough.

Now that the law has changed, Miyares can start investigating and Youngkin appointees can start firing

You really don't understand law.
