So does my white son have an easier or harder time getting into UVA today?
If he looks statistically Asian (CS major from NOVA with 80 AP exams), harder. If he looks statistically like a good ol’ boy (rural high school in a red county), easier.
But the good ol boy from rural VA is still from a family paying Virginia taxes to support UVA. If the good ol boy in the top 10% of his high school, he should be getting into UVA. He shouldn’t be compared against the NOVA kid.
+1000 Yes, it sucks to think that someone with a gasp "lower gpa and lower sat" might get in over your kid. But you have to understand that given the kids background/educational situation, they are the "top students" given their situation. Admitting them to college gives them the opportunity to thrive in much better environment. If you don't get that, you need to step back from your privileged life
