UVA is majority White and Asian. There are only 6% Blacks and 6% Hispanics. Your white son will do just fine just like all the other white men in this country who have been doing great for the past few centuries.

Just say it's majority White. Asians only comprise of 15% of the whole student body.

Which is more than 2x their proportion of the population nationally and statewide.

Exactly. And blacks are only 28% of the nation.

Libidiots always leave these pieces of math out.

If you compare the demographics of the state, University of Virginia has about the same or slightly fewer White students than you would expect based on state demographics, nearly double the Asian students you would expect based on state demographics, and only 1/2 of the Black population you would expect. So for all the memorials to the enslaved people who built the universities and gave labor to the founders of the universities and currently pay state taxes that help support the universities, only half as many Black students as there are proportionately in the state get to attend the flagship university.

I am not happy with the SC decision, however I was thinking UVA will most likely have a difficult time to ever match the % of Black students to their population in the state. How many top Black students choose HBCU’s over UVA? How many Black students do not want to attend a “Southern” university? How many Black students are discouraged from even applying to UVA?

I graduated from UVA in 1998 when it was 12% Black. One of the reasons I chose to attend was because the Black population mimicked that of the US. I have no idea why the percentage of Black students has fallen so much since then and it's sad, but I can assure you it's not because more chose to attend an HBCU or didn't want to attend a "Southern" university.

The way I understand it, the government changed how race is collected in 2010 and that makes comparing populations from before to after difficult. They pulled Hispanic out to a separate question and added more options.

I’m familiar with the census, which uses the government method and schools would have to follow that for reporting purposes.

No changes in how they counted Black. And, yes, UVA used to have a higher Black population than it does now.

Over the years I’ve met a handful of Black UVA graduates from the mid to late aughts and none of them seemed to really love their experience at the school. Their feedback ranged from middling to lukewarm. I wouldn’t underestimate the lure of alternate college choices combined with the decrease in Black students accelerating the decline.

Ya. I can't really imagine that many black students have UVA as their top choice. Charlottesville is almost literally the center of white supremacy.

UVA is the flagship university. Blacks are over 20% of the commonwealth population. The demand is there. Any PWI will have its challenges, especially in the south.

UVA and most large public flagships have always looked for geographic diversity. Are you just learning this?
+1. In UVA's case, I suspect most of the high schools will be rural.

Ha ha ha no.

Look, they really want to continue with their existing racial balance, it's just that now they need to work out less blatantly discriminatory ways to do it.

UVA has never come anywhere close to the state Black percentage in its enrollment.

Nah, the little box is gone so you can't have it both ways and just need to move on. Besides, first gen, rural kids and students from under represented high schools have been institutional priorities for several years. Many schools are now touting the number of countries, states and high schools represented in their incoming class.

This I only know a few black students who liked their time at UVA. The rest didn't hate it but didn't really like and would not send their kids.

When California abolished raced based college admission in public schools, they tried to use low income as a proxy. But it failed. They found out the state had more low income Whites than low income Blacks and low Hispanics combined. As a result, percentages of Black students and Hispanic students both dropped.

Agreed. We are POC and I am actively dissuading DD from applying to UVA (despite having the stats to be admitted).
