I bet much harder if you’re from northern Virginia. Zip codes with low average salaries are going to be the new hook.

only if he gets this decision get into his head thinking he has an easier path thus prepare less
perception of situation does affect preparation for situation and then outcome

affirmative action had more of an indirect effect for beneficiaries, likely the hope that they can get some boost made them put in the effort to reach the standards and apply, if you know there is no chance of it why even bother but the opposite may be true for some, put less effort into prep cause of the boost from URM would bring it up

How do they plan on “targeting” these schools? Obviously the top students at these schools are already very familiar with UVA and already apply.
Does this announcement basically mean that students from these schools will get an admissions bump?

If he looks statistically Asian (CS major from NOVA with 80 AP exams), harder.

If he looks statistically like a good ol’ boy (rural high school in a red county), easier.

hateful creature, you

AND also is a typical anti-asuan stereotypical racist - exactly the type of rwce-based stereotyping reasoning that Chief Justice Robert's said is now illegal in admissions

UVA is majority White and Asian. There are only 6% Blacks and 6% Hispanics. Your white son will do just fine just like all the other white men in this country who have been doing great for the past few centuries.

Right. And good for UVA.

It’s not like all these Asians who haven’t been getting in (because other Asians have been getting in) are suddenly going to get it.

Easy on the anti- Asian rhetoric. Plenty of Asian don’t agree with the SC decision

NP whatever bro. Perhaps we should replace Asians with Indians.

Just say it's majority White. Asians only comprise of 15% of the whole student body.

Which is more than 2x their proportion of the population nationally and statewide.

It's a guessing game on the impact of whatever admissions changes are made to meet diversity goals without as explicitly considering race and ethnicity. Any changes almost inevitably help some applicants and hurt other applicants - in this case much of it will be unintended consequences.

It could be most confusing for minority applicants. For example if race is not considered directly but there are ways it will be considered indirectly - what are the best ways to play that game. Right now I am guessing the primary way to leverage affirmative action is check the race/ethnicity box and be near the top of the minority applicant pool on conventional metrics. Maybe it is a different game now.

UVA and most large public flagships have always looked for geographic diversity. Are you just learning this?

Gee, a state school is looking for ways to make sure kids from all areas of the state have the opportunity for a great education. How shocking!

In reality, there are areas of Virginia that still do not have Indoor plumbing! And it's not just So one should easily understand that a bit more outreach might need to be done to encourage kids in that area that college might be the right path for them. Why someone would not want that to happen is beyond me. Education is the key to helping forge a better path for the next generation, and getting even one kid from an area like that to attend college and move out of the area with a good job and great prospects for the future just might encourage other kids to strive for the same thing.

FYI---one area is in western Loudon county (Howardsville) and is largely Black area. This is not in SW Va, miles from any city. This is 60 miles from the heart of Washington DC.

IMO, it is an awesome idea that we target kids in this area and encourage them to attend college, and even assist in any way possible to make sure the kids who want to can get a better education. For them and their families, the differences in the future are huge if they can get a college degree---the benefits will help their parents/grandparents as well as future generations.

Exactly. And blacks are only 28% of the nation.

Libidiots always leave these pieces of math out.

Males, of any background, might get an edge being that UVA is about 5% female. The tables have turned.
