Mid 30s - Tips for updating outdated millennial style

Waterfall cardigans
Fitted jean jackets
Skinny jeans and colored jeans
The striped tshirts
The scarves
Dangly jewelry or anything like Kendra Scott

Get some wide leg, straight leg, or flared jeans. A pair of lug sole combat boots goes with anything, some platform white sneakers. Cardigans are cropped and chunky, jewelry is simple gold or silver. Switch to a middle part, I promise it looks fine on you and it will immediately update your style. Get a pair of tailored trousers, I like the ones at Abercrombie.

Buy neutrals. A well fitted tee in gray, black, white, tan. Pairs well with anything. Get some flared leggings for the weekend. Current tends are not as form fitting as the 2010s were, you’re going for a loose, casual fit. Cropped sweatshirts and oversized sweaters vs those prim and fitted ones from 2013.

This is extremely helpful.

Flared leggings cracks me up. In the late 2000s we called those yoga pants. Lol. And they were great so I’m glad they’re coming back!

I’ve seen some of these videos and I have come to the conclusion that the two things making Millennials look the most dated are the whole “tall boots over skinny jeans or leggings” look, and long, tunic-like tops with leggings or skinny jeans. I think if you ditch just those two things and opt for white sneakers, flats, or like … literally any other shoe, and somewhat shorter tops, you’ve ditched the most dated styles.

There’s some dated accessories too like big statement necklaces, light indoor/decorative type scarves or blanket scarves, faux fur vests etc. that I’ve seen people our age holding on to as well but those are easy enough to just not wear anymore.

I haven’t seen anyone wear this look in at least 7 years.

Then be grossed out, your problem, not ours.

I see it regularly on my kids teachers (elementary school, teachers seem to be in their mid-30s to mid-40s) or a similar look with dressy flats instead and with a longer fitted cardigan. I also see it a lot outside of this area.

I can vouch that this is a particularly tough fashion stretch if you’re a teacher. The “trends” are too casual for work (ie light wash wide leg jeans and combat boots) and the next step up is more business casual (dress pants, blouses) which is more reserved for administrators at my school. So, many of us are still hanging in to darker skinnier and boots/flats.

I am 40. I don’t really buy trendy things to begin with but if something looks good on you, wear it! Who cares! Unless it’s a totally out there no one will bat an eye if you wear skinny jeans. Honestly. At least at my age I go for what looks flattering not what’s “trendy.” That being said I do love a high waisted pant and the crop tops too look good with those.

PP here - At least for work. I have some more updated denim/tops for the weekends.

Not a fully exposed stomach, no. The point is to wear a higher rise pair of jeans/pants and then a shorter top with it. It’s different from the late 90s/early 2000s style of low rise jeans and crop top where you did mean to show a lot of stomach … lol.

Gen X checking in - I thought the really high waisted pants were going on, and that mid and lower rise jeans were trendy again? Or are they all in style now - everything except skinnies?

It's funny, all my life I've worn whatever the heck I like - except I always feel a bit of anxiety over jeans styles. I think because I want to buy clothes I am going to wear for years, and I just never know if those jeans I just dropped $100 on are going to be somehow passe in 20 minutes.

Ok but OP WANTS to be more on trend. Nobody is saying you have to be, we are just telling someone who wants to be how to get there.

Low rise is coming back in but a) it’s not the low rise we wore in the 2000s, comparatively it’s more mid-rise than low and b) you don’t pair low rise with a shirt that has a longer hem, they go best with cropped tops, so they’re not gonna work at work; high or mid rise jeans are still going to be better for those situations.

I think the issue with skinny jeans that can make them look dated isn’t the jeans themselves, it’s more the footwear and the shirt/cardigan you wear with them. They’re basically here to stay and are a flattering look for a lot of people.

Gen Z fashion isn't for me. I'm riding this wave out and sticking to simple timeless pieces.

Agree with this. They aren’t going to be the most trendy look, but if your shoes, top, and accessories are more up to date then they won’t look horribly out of place either. There are also straight cut options, which are like one step away. Not full on baggy mom jeans or flares (sorry, not wearing, I don’t care how trendy they are) but not as skinny.

PP here - adding as an example, an outfit of skinny jeans, a “shacket,” combat/lug sole boots, and delicate gold jewelry. It would be most on trend to wear a different style of jean, but this combo would be more flattering for my figure and still have some modern elements to freshen it up.
