I’ve seen some of these videos and I have come to the conclusion that the two things making Millennials look the most dated are the whole “tall boots over skinny jeans or leggings” look, and long, tunic-like tops with leggings or skinny jeans. I think if you ditch just those two things and opt for white sneakers, flats, or like … literally any other shoe, and somewhat shorter tops, you’ve ditched the most dated styles. There’s some dated accessories too like big statement necklaces, light indoor/decorative type scarves or blanket scarves, faux fur vests etc. that I’ve seen people our age holding on to as well but those are easy enough to just not wear anymore. |
| Are all women in mid 30s really wearing crop tops?! Like exposed stomach? |
If you wear higher waisted jeans or pants there’s no midriff…unless you have to reach up in the grocery store, which is why I don’t wear them for that |
You’re so right. I love my tall boots and indoor scarves in the fall though. |
| I love this thread. Reminding me of the summer in college that I worked retail and felt like such hot sh*t in my royal blue skinny jeans, striped v neck t shirt, statement necklace, fake nerd glasses, and black tieks. And then camel brown Frye riding boots in the fall/winter. |
| Combo of front door fashion and evereve helped me catch up (39yo). I’ve especially appreciate the help with denim / pants |
Not a fully exposed stomach, no. The point is to wear a higher rise pair of jeans/pants and then a shorter top with it. It’s different from the late 90s/early 2000s style of low rise jeans and crop top where you did mean to show a lot of stomach … lol. |
+1 Striped shirts - classic. Always in style. |
Some; a bit of midriff with high waisted pants is in fashion now. But I think most posters are referring to something that covers the midriff but is cropped closer to where the pants rise to. So the tops go to right below the belly button rather than down to the hips like in the 2000s |
I am the OP’s generation and I just tried Mother jeans too. They have some styles that instantly updated my wardrobe. Agree with this recommendation. |
| I am so grossed out by seeing everyone's fat, doughy stomachs and fupas, either bare or under mom jeans. it's such an unflattering look on literally everyone, even models. conscientious objector here. |
| Are tall boots ‘out’ when worn with skirts or dresses? I admit I like a bit of leg covering in the cold. Tall boots are pretty basic black, purchased a decade ago. Is there an updated substitution? |
|
Oh god not the colored jeans . Here’s items you probably have and wear that are dated. If you like them then wear them, but if you’re trying to be on trend, put these in storage:
Waterfall cardigans Fitted jean jackets Skinny jeans and colored jeans The striped tshirts The scarves Dangly jewelry or anything like Kendra Scott Get some wide leg, straight leg, or flared jeans. A pair of lug sole combat boots goes with anything, some platform white sneakers. Cardigans are cropped and chunky, jewelry is simple gold or silver. Switch to a middle part, I promise it looks fine on you and it will immediately update your style. Get a pair of tailored trousers, I like the ones at Abercrombie. Buy neutrals. A well fitted tee in gray, black, white, tan. Pairs well with anything. Get some flared leggings for the weekend. Current tends are not as form fitting as the 2010s were, you’re going for a loose, casual fit. Cropped sweatshirts and oversized sweaters vs those prim and fitted ones from 2013. |
Tall boots with midi skirts or sweater skirts are very in. Especially if they’re heeled. |
Yes. The cut of the pants is high and loose so a crop doesn’t show midriff and looks good with them. But mid 30s women can also wear them and show midriff in more casual outfits on the weekend and it looks fine. We aren’t in the Victorian age. Wear what you like and stop body shaming yourself. |
