I’m a very empathetic person. I genuinely do not see how it’s offensive.

reposted from earlier in the thread "As a Christian, I really can't wrap my head around other Christians who don't approach this with the golden rule. If I imagine being in a country where I was a religious minority, and people from the religious majority wanted to use a sacred Christian holiday but take away all the religious content from my faith and insert their own religious texts, I would find that very disrespectful."

Like a Hanukkah tree?

A Christmas tree isn’t sacred!!

Interesting you say that because there’s a lot of secular seders among Jews as well. (Also, FYI much like the theme of spring evolved with the Jewish Passover Seder, so has the Christmas tree for observant Christians. The star on top represents the star of Bethlehem and is turned on only on Christmas.)

I’d love to know what you think a secular Seder would entail.

Stop trying to make Passover like a Christmas tree. It’s nothing like a Christmas tree.

Who the heck cares if Christians have seders? We live in a free country. If you want to have a Seder, be my guest. You can pray to the sun god for all I care. Live and let live. Stop with this appropriation B. S.

Newsflash: You can go do whatever you want in your own home and in your own house of worship, too!

Newsflash: it’s not ok to appropriate people’s cultures or religions.

Christianity was founded by Jews, and as adapted and merged them with other cultures. The Hebrew Scriptures are the foundation for the New Testament and are an important part of the Bible.

So Judaism is Christianity Jr. to you. You realize that Jews don’t see it that way? For the umpteenth time, nobody owns Exodus, but Passover is a Jewish rite.

Guess what? The stories in the New Testament of the Christian Bible are a big part of Islam. Jesus is a prophet in the Quran—and not even the most important one! I’m Christian and I can deal with that. You need to find a way to deal with the fact that Judaism and Christianity (and Islam) have a lot of overlap and most of it is in the Torah and old testament.

And you need to accept that Judaism is a distinct religion and you can’t just insert Jesus into our traditions.

I’m the PP: Here’s what you keep missing: Passover is part of the Christian holy book. It’s not the most important part but it is there. It’s not your place to dictate to Christians how to celebrate passover any more than it is for Christians to dictate how Muslims use the Jesus stories in their religion.

once again for those of you in the back. Exodus is in the Old Testament. Christians can absolutely have a celebration that recognizes the salvation of Israel in the context of Jesus’s Passion and sacrifice. Hmmm let’s call it EASTER.

the Passover seder with its liturgy and traditions, is Jewish.

the analogy is really that Jews should not light advent candles. Christmas is mostly secular; passover seders are home-based religious rituals.

Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. In car you weren’t aware.

I will reflect on the Book of Exodus and God's mercy and the hope he gives to me as I see fit.

Passover is a Jewish religious ceremony that does not involve Jesus, in case you were not aware.

You keep insisting that Exodus is irrelevant for Christians because it’s in the Old Testament of the Bible. That makes about as much sense as if I (as a Christian) declared half the Torah irrelevant to Jews.

Do you need to watch the video of the pastor I posted above?

Consider others. It’s the golden rule.

Yes, and? Pastors have opinions and views. So do pundints. So do journalists. So do writers. So does everyone n DCUM.

Yes. And?

My spirituality has zero to do with your opinions.

You have things you can do to reflect on Exodus and Christ. The Passover Seder has nothing to do with that.

I don't know a single Jew who celebrates Christmas in early Fall, when Jesus was likely born.

The December festivities are 1000% secular.

Welcome to having one’s faith appropriated. And now it looks like seders will be appropriated. Join the club. Oh well. Stop whining. We only put up a Seder tree. We don’t do the other religious stuff.

that’s literally the opposite of what I wrote. I wrote that there is already a Christian religious rite that observes Exodus in the context of Jesus being the Paschal Lamb. It’s Easter. No Jewish people object to you celebrating Easter.
