I asked something similar a few pages ago: does it feel authentic or a persona like Larry the Cable Guy.

To me it feels like a persona, definitely contrived for reasons other than artistic expression.

yes a persona but beyond that, it feels engineered entirely to a. stoke false outrage over race. I am all for conversations about race, but not engineered to specifically make someone richer and b. designed solely for the purpose of making a point.
I'm just missing the part where beyonce showed any interest in country music before this. and why should she? it sucks.

Agreed. Feels like some sort of persona to "rub it" in the faces of country fans. In other words, next level trolling. Which I can appreciate, but 10 bucks says Beyoncé never tours this material. Because in the end, she doesn't really care about it.

Her and Jay Z wanted to make a statement. And if/when she doesn't win Album of the Year at the Grammies next year for Cowboy Carter, they will have another sh#t-fit.

But congrats on the successful engagement farming?

100%. Manufactured outrage so they can be mad when she doesn’t win everything.

It’s not to say that there’s not racism in awards - there is. And it’s not to say Beyoncé isn’t deserving of artist of the year - she has been. But this does feel like just trolling and I think people are reacting to that. Music should come from something you love - like lemonade was so powerful bc it was like rage and love and soulful and angry. This is just like - I guess??? But why?

I don't even really buy the "racist" argument. Jon Batiste just won AOTY two years ago. Bruno Mars in 2018. Lauren Hill, Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones, Ray Charles, Santana....all won AOTY within the previous 25 years. Stevie Wonder won AOTY three times within four years (74, 75, and 77). Hell, Michael Jackson won AOTY only once in his career for Thriller in 1984.

No, Beyonce doesn't "deserve" AOTY just because.

Here's who Beyoncé lost to in each year:

2010
Winner: Taylor Swift - Fearless
Runner up: Beyoncé - I Am....Sasha Fierce

2015
Winner: Beck - Morning Phase
Runner up: Beyoncé - Beyoncé

2017
Winner: Adele - 25
Runner Up: Beyoncé - Lemonade

2023
Winner: Harry Styles - Harry's House
Runner Up: Beyoncé - Renaissance

She was arguably robbed in 2015. That was a forgettable album by Beck. Every other year she had very stiff competition. Unfortunately, Lemonade came out the same time as Adele's 25....any other year and Beyoncé would've won with Lemonde. But 25 was a monster album.

So in other words, she maybe should have won once? And many people think she’s overrated.

She is nothing but a child having a tantrum. She and her husband are both childish arrogant twits.

Beyoncé must be one of the most overrated entertainers of all time. She doesn’t completely suck, but she’s certainly nothing special.

It may help for some of you to just start with Wikipedia on Cowboy Carter?

As a child she attended the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo every year with her family wearing western clothing. She performed at the Rodeo four times between 2001 and 2007.

Beyoncé's first notable association with country music came in 2007, when she performed a bluegrass-inspired version of her hit "Irreplaceable" with country duo Sugarland at the American Music Awards.

She first released an original country song in 2016 with the song "Daddy Lessons" on her album Lemonade.

Beyoncé, with the Chicks (who had previously covered the song), performed it at the 50th Annual Country Music Association Awards on November 2, 2016. The performance received critical acclaim and gave the CMA Awards their HIGHEST viewership figures in history; however, some country music fans criticized Beyoncé's attendance and felt she did not belong in the genre.

The CMA deleted ALL promotional posts about Beyoncé's performance, succumbing to the pressure in an attempt to prevent backlash against the organization.

Beyonce has been country, and certainly meets the criteria by any stretches of the DCUM imagination.

She has likely attended more rodeos than you, and if not she has performed at more rodeos. Definitely more AMAs and CMAs, no?

And while she has faced discrimination, do you know what Linda Martell was bombarded with? Do you know what it means for Linda Martell to be on this album with Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson?

Oh, and NO ONE is up in arms about Dolly Parton! Boycott Dollywood is not a battle cry lol. She is literally treated like royalty here and has a pristine reputation.

I am not a super fan of Beyoncé. But the DCUM minimizing and erasure of her knowledge and participation in this area of music is mind boggling. And I won’t venture to guess why….so I will suggest you consider lyrics from Willie Nelson on Smoke Hour II:

“You're turned into KNTRY Radio Texas, home of the real deal
And if there’s one thing you can take away from my set today, let it be this:
Sometimes you don't know what you like until someone you trust turns you on to some real good sh*t
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I'm here
Up next on "The Smoke Hour" is, "JUST FOR FUN" by Beyoncé
You’re welcome”

Yeah, people being dismissive are forgetting where Beyonce is from.

Beyonce arriving at the Houston rodeo to perform.

Is that a belly dancing outfit? Where's the cowboy hat?

That's the same type of stage outfit she's always worn.

She wore a cowboy hat two years ago in her Ivy Park ad.

Country music is country music! And it doesn't come from wannabees. Just because you carry a lot of $ and your name is known DOES NOT mean you step across to my side of the sidewalk! Yuck!!!!

Yikes

Today Explained had a great episode on country music's black roots. And I doubt Dolly Parton would want to be on the sidewalk with this poster. S/he can stand in the middle of the road with this racism.

Because the roots of country music (and rock n roll) originated in Africa and the diaspora. She's actually taking it back, good for her

They had guitars in Africa?

AOTY?? I mean her butt is ok, but Ass of the Year? C’mon now.

It’s not like you can’t find any connection between Beyoncé and country.

But come on - Houston is hardly ‘country’ (it’s a city) and Beyoncé has not made her name in that genre. You could argue that I should make a country album based on time I spent riding horses as a kid and in florida? But I should not. You can’t boil the ocean. Country sucks so it makes no sense other than mild trolling

Country does not suck. It may not be your music taste, but it does not suck and let me remind you that Taylor Swift who many of you clamored to get your daughters to see is an original country music artist, not fake like Beyonce. So, no country music does not suck. Not buying Be isn't trolling Southerners, not for one minute. And btw, her voice is atrocious on the Jolene song! Who the h ll in her camp let that get out?

This. She does not have the voice of a Mary J Blige, not in the same universe. But she's good at using stripper poles in her shows so there's that I suppose.

She won't be touring Act II anytime soon. Her touring schedule is rigorous and the rehearsals are intense. Renaissance was a 6-month tour; her last tour before that was 5 years ago. There were 4 years between On the Run and On the Run II tours. She's got small children, she might do some dates here and there, but there won't be another big tour for a while.

Rumor is (likely just wishful thinking) act iii will be Destiny's Child album!

Huh? I'm a MJB super fan. I'd never put her in the category of a powerful voice. Now if you would have said Adele, I would have given you that.

Little secret, not all the best entertainers of all time will have the best voices of all time and not all best voices of all time will be the best entertainers.

Michael Jackson and Prince are GOAT like figures (and great singers) but not the best voices in their genre. Taylor Swift is not even top 5 voices of her peers but she's a GOAT in her genre/category. Same with Usher. You can't deny Beyonce is the same. Drake is far from the best 20 rappers, but he's still a star nonetheless. Why the Beyonce hate?

Huh? I love Mary! Love love love her, however, she's not the best vocalist. Not even close to it.
