Curious if anyone else feels this way: it feels like clickbait to me. I feel like they sat down and discussed where the cultural tension was greatest and therefore where attention would be highest and chose country. I feel somehow manipulated by it, which feels for music - kind of like a miss. I get it, same thing that artists have done for eons, like lil nas x. But he was subverting for different reasons and it was one song. It just all feels a bit contrived to me.
I asked something similar a few pages ago: does it feel authentic or a persona like Larry the Cable Guy. To me it feels like a persona, definitely contrived for reasons other than artistic expression.
yes a persona but beyond that, it feels engineered entirely to a. stoke false outrage over race. I am all for conversations about race, but not engineered to specifically make someone richer and b. designed solely for the purpose of making a point. I'm just missing the part where beyonce showed any interest in country music before this. and why should she? it sucks.
DP here: Agreed. Feels like some sort of persona to "rub it" in the faces of country fans. In other words, next level trolling. Which I can appreciate, but 10 bucks says Beyoncé never tours this material. Because in the end, she doesn't really care about it. Her and Jay Z wanted to make a statement. And if/when she doesn't win Album of the Year at the Grammies next year for Cowboy Carter, they will have another sh#t-fit. But congrats on the successful engagement farming?
100%. Manufactured outrage so they can be mad when she doesn’t win everything. It’s not to say that there’s not racism in awards - there is. And it’s not to say Beyoncé isn’t deserving of artist of the year - she has been. But this does feel like just trolling and I think people are reacting to that. Music should come from something you love - like lemonade was so powerful bc it was like rage and love and soulful and angry. This is just like - I guess??? But why?
I don't even really buy the "racist" argument. Jon Batiste just won AOTY two years ago. Bruno Mars in 2018. Lauren Hill, Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones, Ray Charles, Santana....all won AOTY within the previous 25 years. Stevie Wonder won AOTY three times within four years (74, 75, and 77). Hell, Michael Jackson won AOTY only once in his career for Thriller in 1984. No, Beyonce doesn't "deserve" AOTY just because.
Here's who Beyoncé lost to in each year: 2010 Winner: Taylor Swift - Fearless Runner up: Beyoncé - I Am....Sasha Fierce 2015 Winner: Beck - Morning Phase Runner up: Beyoncé - Beyoncé 2017 Winner: Adele - 25 Runner Up: Beyoncé - Lemonade 2023 Winner: Harry Styles - Harry's House Runner Up: Beyoncé - Renaissance She was arguably robbed in 2015. That was a forgettable album by Beck. Every other year she had very stiff competition. Unfortunately, Lemonade came out the same time as Adele's 25....any other year and Beyoncé would've won with Lemonde. But 25 was a monster album.
So in other words, she maybe should have won once? And many people think she’s overrated. She is nothing but a child having a tantrum. She and her husband are both childish arrogant twits.
