Would you allow your 16 year old daughter to wear one of those almost thong swimsuits?

I'm shocked that DH brother and wife allow her to wear a swimsuit like that, but I kept my mouth shut. My daughters are a bit younger, but is this the kind of swimsuit that most high school girls wear now?

You should continue to keep your mouth shut. My SIL said something similar to me. Something about how she can't believe I let my daughters wear those short shorts. I looked at her and said because they like them, they fit into them, they're good kids, and the last thing I'm going to do is shame a girl for what they're wearing.

What if your daughter had the body of a swimsuit model and men already stared at her?

Okay but you didn’t remotely engage with what your SIL said. And you can’t “shame” a girl (WTF with the overuse of the word “shame” these days, BTW) for the clothes she’s wearing if you just don’t let her wear those clothes in the first place! I realize this is going to blow your mind, but you are the mother which means you are the decider! Stop abdicating your responsibilities onto your underage daughter, maybe?

This. Majority of bathing suits marketed to teens are this style now. The same thing with crop tops over the past few years. If adults don't want to see teens wearing these, then perhaps adults in the fashion industry should stop making them.

They’ll stop making them when all the idiot moms stop buying them. This should be obvious.

Where do women's bathing suits go from here? Completely transparent? Maybe a hole so we can see directly between the cheeks themselves?

MIL insisted that DD’s choice was “disrespectful, unflattering & embarrassing” (particularly for FIL).

This conversation forever changed DD’s relationship with her grandparents. She never joined them again on another beach vacation. Shortly thereafter, MIL also passively aggressively asked DD if her new depression diagnosis was related to her noticeable weight gain. That was the last straw. DD was body shamed for the last time and now has a cordial, distant relationship with infrequent contact.

Disrespectful grandkid because daughter in law is disrespectful.

Well this might blow your mind, but I actually did let them buy the clothes. I DECIDED they can wear them and that I'm not going to make a big deal over a pair of short shorts that 75% of teen girls wear these days. What makes you think that YOU get to decide what's appropriate for all teen girls, Judgy?

Ok, that's literally a thong and the only people I see on the beach wearing those are adult women. The OP was talking about swim bottoms that are between full coverage and a thong.
