Would you allow your 16 year old daughter to wear one of those almost thong swimsuits?

MIL insisted that DD’s choice was “disrespectful, unflattering & embarrassing” (particularly for FIL).

This conversation forever changed DD’s relationship with her grandparents. She never joined them again on another beach vacation. Shortly thereafter, MIL also passively aggressively asked DD if her new depression diagnosis was related to her noticeable weight gain. That was the last straw. DD was body shamed for the last time and now has a cordial, distant relationship with infrequent contact.

Sounds like the ILs did her a favor. No one wants to see a fat girl in a thong.

It looks trashy. Another point is a teenager might look okay in them, but why would you be okay with every male 10-99 ogling your DD's behind? The look is designed to get guys to look.

It’s not that we’re cool with it. It’s that when your strong, smart, confident , beautiful 17 year old DD tells you “stop slut shaming” her friends when you casually comment on what you think are outlandish fashion choices of her peers, you realize SHE’s RIGHT. I should mind my own business largely.

Some behavior should be shamed, including exposing your body in an attempt to receive sexual attention from strange men.

In Europe the girls regularly wear no bathing suits at all- thus saving a small fortune! This discussion is Puritanical. (If there were a Dutch DCUM this whole thread would be laughed off the web).

Just letting you think about how American this conversation is.

No, I would not.

That second one isn’t even revealing. It is what every serious swimmer wears to two hour intense swim practices in PVS.

Find something else to focus on.

Same. My DS and DD, both have been raised with boundaries, manners and common sense.

Um, no.

I have lived in Europe for 14 years, in four different countries. I have never, EVER seen a teen girl on a beach or at a pool not wearing a bathing suit. What are you even talking about?

I'm shocked that DH brother and wife allow her to wear a swimsuit like that, but I kept my mouth shut. My daughters are a bit younger, but is this the kind of swimsuit that most high school girls wear now?

No I would not allow it. I’m the parent. They can do this once independent and out of my home if they want to then….

Girls this age don’t even fully understand their sexuality. It’s mean for parents to allow their daughter to dress like this.

My girls are wearing a string in the back that looks like shoe lace and a small triangle patch in the front. Nothing is stopping them because their mother wears the same thing.

So I try not to be too uptight with these things but as a mom of kids in upper elementary, my daughter and son always comments- Mom- I can see that girl’s whole butt! I just say “yep!” Then I have to keep reminding them not to stare. I just don’t understand why these teen girls want everyone staring at them.

This. Majority of bathing suits marketed to teens are this style now. The same thing with crop tops over the past few years. If adults don't want to see teens wearing these, then perhaps adults in the fashion industry should stop making them.
