It wasn't clear to me if Daemon and Rhaeneyra were in on the "Laenor isn't actually dead but escaped to live his own life" twist.

Did Daemon kill that guard just as part of the plan to get the assassin/lover in the room with Laenor or was he helping secure a decoy body?
Did the assassin/lover go to Laenor, tell him the plan, and the two of them staged his death and escaped?

Rhaeneyra coldly killing (or thinking she did) her husband who just tried to recommit to being a good father make her a very different player than staging his death does.

This was my impression. I think Daemon and Rhaenyra were a part of the plot to fake the death. Daemon recruited Qarl and provided him with the decoy body.

Exactly right. All three were complicit in the plot to get the lives they wanted.

I also agree that all of them were in on it. I feel terrible for Laenor's parents unless they are later revealed to be in the know, but that's not the impression I got. As I asked upthread, do you think Daemon and Rhaeneyra will raise Daemon's girls, or the Driftmark grandparents will?

I think D&R will raise them for multiple reasons:

1) I think Daemon actually has real affection for them, which makes sense because he's incredibly self-regarding and they are his children. He won't just toss his own blood aside -- remember the Targaryen house words are "fire and blood." Family is everything to them.

2) They understand that the girls are also an asset. One of them is a dragon rider -- if they gave the girls up, they'd also give up the dragon. No way. Plus even without the dragon, the girls can be used as pawns in political plays down the road -- promised to other families in return for money or military or political support. They are incredibly calculating and their goal is to rule Westeros. They aren't going to throw away valuable assets.

But both of these could also cause the grandparents to fight for the girls and try to sway them over to their side, especially when they are older and of marrying age. I anticipate lots of manipulations of this younger generation in future episodes/seasons. It's the GOT way.

I don't agree with this. He seems really detached from them. The scene where the family was arguing over Aemond losing an eye, Rhaenys, the girls' grandmother, was the one who was comforting them. Daemon stood on the other side of the room, and only became involved when Criston went to aid the Queen. The blocking for the Blacks at the end of the scene, was Daemon standing beside Rhaenyra with her sons between them, while Rhaenys stood with the girls on the edge of the frame. Rhaenyra and her interests seem to be Daemon's top priority, and I think his interest in his daughters will depend on how useful they are to Rhaenyra.

I agree with all of this, but especially the new Aemond. Luckily he'll be wearing an eyepatch, so I can tell them apart.

D&L. Their children seem to be tight.

+1 - I predict one of Rhaenyra's boys will marry one of Daemon's girls. The two eldest seem the most likely, unless there's a need for a different alliance in the future.

Plus, this is Westeros. I can see the Driftmark grandparents trying to turn the girls against Daemon and Rhaenyra in their grief. Better to keep them in the fold.

I thought it was weird when Driftmark grandma (I know her name is a version of Rhaenyra's, but I can't be bothered) came up Daemon's girls and Jace (also her grandson!) immediately left and moved away.

This was also my impression. Why else have the dialog about how R&D thought L was a good man?

This, plus also the last scene between Rhaenyr and Leaner was so warm that for her to turn around and have him killed would really make her out to be a total villain. Like it is obvious in the scene that she has great affection for him, wishes that they could have made their marriage work better for both of them while also serving political needs, and wants him to be happy. And also in that scene he basically says he's willing to put aside what he actually wants and would make him happy in order to serve those political ends for her benefit and their kids. Having him killed after he offers to selflessly put her needs before his would be unbelievably cold hearted especially given how that episode unfolded.

PP here — Exactly. I will miss him. The actor is so attractive! The character however is frustrating — like even if you couldn’t really get it on in the bedroom, you could at least been around to defend the boys and put on a good show in public more often.

And could have gotten it on in the bedroom. Any trueborn child would have made this all much easier.

l

Clearly she and the boy understand the open secret. His turning away seemed more like a chance to let the girls grieve more intimately/ semi-privately with their grandma.

I don’t know what but that funeral event reminds me of many DCUM Thanksgiving/Christmas/high holiday event where the matriarch demands everyone come to her house and everyone there is miserable due to family infighting.

I took it as a fertility issue vice him not being able to perform with her. I felt it was implied in conversation by both of them that why had tried.

We're about to have so many lanky white haired young men... Aemond needed to lose an eye just to help us all keep track of who is who now that we're into the Dance of Dragons lol

Ha! So true. I just rewatched the preview for next week and I don't get it. The short little one is Aegon and the tall Matt Smith dupe with the patch is Aemond? I don't get it.

That said Matt Smith casting is spot on. He is brilliant playing this role.

Yes in this most recent episode they discussed that they tried several times to no avail.

I took it as they tried but he couldn’t get excited enough to finish the deed. 🤷‍♀️ I just hope he comes back and swoops in on his dragon on some heroic attempt to save his family though sadly I think it really was the last we hear of him.

So who will be the heir after Rhaenyra? She isn't going after Daemon hoping for a child to be heir, right?

Ps Is it possible for a dragon rider to leave their dragon behind? Or does it find you?

She may be trying to hedge her bets.

She might have more kids with Daemon.

Any child she has with Daemon would only be the heir if they give up any pretense of her first three being true born sons.
