If you tear down Columbus statues, are you changing the name of Columbus, Ohio? Shouldn't you first eliminate the Columbus Day Federal Holiday?
Why in the world are people making this about Italian Americans wanting to assert themselves with WASPs from more than 100 years ago? What about the fraternal Catholic organization, the Knights of Columbus? That isn't just Italians and Republicans. |
As to the highlighted section, its because it was an expression of identity. There are parallels to this today. Also, does anyone support changing the name of the District of Columbia? |
The Knights of Columbus who were the ones who got the statues and the holiday in the first place? They can take the statutes back to their clubhouses, and take off whatever day they want. Taking down a statue is not a big deal, as we've seen it can be done by amateurs. Changing the name of a city is a little more involved. How about we do the easy things, instead of fighting about them? |
You don't appear to be well informed on the history of any of the items you mention. The Knights of Columbus was launched right before the turn of last century for immigrant Catholics, who at that time were pretty much 90% Italian. Hence the name Knights of Columbus, since Columbus had emerged as a symbol and source of pride for Italian immigrants. The Federal Holiday has it's origins around exactly the same time. It was a 1 time deal to placate the community after the lynching of a group of Italian immigrants. As Italian-American gained power and influence they pushed to make it a Federal Holiday, many decades later. I understand that for many Italian-American's this is a symbol of their ancestral struggles and journey into this country - which was rough and a lot of emotions are tied to it. I really hope they understand that it can be just as emotionally powerful, but on the other end of the spectrum, for other citizens in this country. |
People are going to fight you. You can't just walk into neighborhoods and start destroying property because you aren't capable of tackling the more challenging tasks. |
Um, the Irish would be among the many groups of Catholic immigrants at that time who would be surprised by that percentage. |
Um no, that was a few decades later. Plenty stats available on open source and books written about it. |
I meant a few decades earlier. |
| Y’all still talking about statues? You should start focusing on statutes instead. Change the laws and politics instead of defacing public property. Contribute to a PAC. Buy a politician. Do something effective. Learn how real power and money work. Looting Target just won’t cut it. It didn’t work with the Rodney King incident years ago and it won’t work now. |
or do both! |
South Dakota changed the name of the holiday to Native Americans' Day, part of the state's Year of Reconciliation with its tribes. Two years later, Berkeley, California, became the first city to officially jettison the Columbus Day name; the new moniker was Indigenous Peoples' Day. The states of Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, South Dakota, New Mexico, Maine, Wisconsin, and parts of California including, for example, Los Angeles County do not recognize it and have each replaced it with celebrations of Indigenous People's Day. Michigan, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia are among the most recent states and areas to change the October holiday to "Indigenous Peoples' Day" to recognize the native populations that were displaced and decimated after Christopher Columbus and other European explorers reached the continent. |
