You don't appear to be well informed on the history of any of the items you mention.

The Knights of Columbus was launched right before the turn of last century for[b] immigrant Catholics, who at that time were pretty much 90% Italian.[/b] Hence the name Knights of Columbus, since Columbus had emerged as a symbol and source of pride for Italian immigrants.

The Federal Holiday has it's origins around exactly the same time. It was a 1 time deal to placate the community after the lynching of a group of Italian immigrants. As Italian-American gained power and influence they pushed to make it a Federal Holiday, many decades later.

I understand that for many Italian-American's this is a symbol of their ancestral struggles and journey into this country - which was rough and a lot of emotions are tied to it. I really hope they understand that it can be just as emotionally powerful, but on the other end of the spectrum, for other citizens in this country.[/quote]
