If you tear down Columbus statues, are you changing the name of Columbus, Ohio? Shouldn't you first eliminate the Columbus Day Federal Holiday? Why in the world are people making this about Italian Americans wanting to assert themselves with WASPs from more than 100 years ago? What about the fraternal Catholic organization, the Knights of Columbus? That isn't just Italians and Republicans.
South Dakota changed the name of the holiday to Native Americans' Day, part of the state's Year of Reconciliation with its tribes. Two years later, Berkeley, California, became the first city to officially jettison the Columbus Day name; the new moniker was Indigenous Peoples' Day. The states of Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, South Dakota, New Mexico, Maine, Wisconsin, and parts of California including, for example, Los Angeles County do not recognize it and have each replaced it with celebrations of Indigenous People's Day. Michigan, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia are among the most recent states and areas to change the October holiday to "Indigenous Peoples' Day" to recognize the native populations that were displaced and decimated after Christopher Columbus and other European explorers reached the continent.
