When a celebrity in person really underwhelms you

Questlove and the rest of the Roots - nice guys, very chill, but extremely stoned while playing basketball prior to doing a college show - like, we were wondering how we were going to get them off the court and on stage.

Various members of Dave Matthews Band, but not DM himself - all nice, down to earth, seemed like attentive parents. Mostly opted for non-dairy milks in their coffees and hot cocoas.

Uhhhh Dave Grohl has nothing to do with the Goo Goo Dolls?

Gwyneth has never been more than average looks-wise to me.

She has worn the same hairstyle & length it is boring.
And to think she was People magazines Most Beautiful Woman in the World!!

I met Tony Hawk at a clothing line promotion during the late 90’s and thought he was great around his young fans and much more handsome in person.

I saw Mandy Moore in San Diego at Mission Bay at the MTV beach house in the summer of ‘97-99....????
She smiled a lot to the fans.
Ananda Lewis was there too and was so pretty.

Jessica Simpson was engaged and friendly with the audience but once the cameras were off, she instantly turned stuck-up snob.
A fan called out

( cont.)
“ Jessica....!!
You have something on your shoe....!”
which she did.

She gave the fan a dirty look and never looked at her shoe or responded Thank you.

Same here. I met Perry Farrell when I was in college and he was an absolute sweetheart. Came across as very intelligent and we had a lengthy conversation. He's not a big guy but his face and eyes were absolutely mesmerizing (the recent terrible plastic surgery he's had is a sin, in my opinion). Dave Navarro was also really cool and incredibly handsome.

I've seen Ice-T and Coco in person a couple times. She is TINY, all hair and huge boobs. One time, I saw them in the airport and she was clad head-to-toe in a very tight leather getup and tall stiletto boots. I cannot imagine how she would've been comfortable on even a short flight in that outfit.

I once ran into Method Man and Redman at a boxing match. I didn't talk to Method Man but Redman was hilariously funny. He also had on a diamond cuff bracelet that probably cost more than most people's cars.

John Travolta would be meandering in the lobby in the middle of the night, and once he came and ate staff meal with us in the cantine at 3am. He was completely normal and super cool.

On the other end of the spectrum, Steve Martin was a total dick. He insisted that staff call him by his pseudonym and tried to get a server fired when she called him “Mr Martin”. When other guests approached him, he passed out cards that says “This card certifies that I met Steve Martin” without saying anything to them.

George Michael hit on me. Oh, those were the days…

What?? No way!! :

George Michael?

Are you male or female?

THAT'S my question!

Dave Grohl’s Mom lives in my neighborhood. When he’s in town, he stays there. I’ve never seen him. But his neighbors say he’s super nice.

I've heard some wild stories about Chloe Sevigny. She overlaps with some artists in my field.

A colleague was a photo-shoot assistant for a few years in Brooklyn and said most celebrities are much more angular in person--i.e. Reese Witherspoon's chin and Natalie Portman's cheekbones. Exaggerated proportions look great on camera.

My funniest encounter was with John and Kate Plus 8 during the PEAK of their popularity. We were taking the same plane out of Philadelphia and they were horrible. They hilariously drawing attention to themselves by huffing and puffing about wanting privacy. Kate--with her wackadoodle highlights and haircut--was acting like she would vomit if a plebeian were to enter into her personal space. No one even cared that they were there! At the time, I was surprised that reality show "stars" were being so bratty, but I guess that was their true nature all along.

I never got the hype about him, truly.

I was never a huge fan of his, but one time I got stuck in a room with him waiting for a meeting to start, and he kept us entertained for about an hour. He is naturally funny.

I enjoy wild stories (and I would guess that others do as well)

Why don’t you share them

I was just thinking the other day, as I heard a Wham! song on the radio, how BEAUTIFUL George Michael was. I’m still so sad he’s gone. Such an amazing singer.

I pointed out my kid a few feet away from him and he didn’t apologize or anything. On top of everything else, it was pretty awkward. I later heard from a friend who was on an airplane with him that he was rude to her too for no reason at all.

Lainey Gossip has a similar story about Jake Gyllenhaal. I can’t think of a recent movie he’s been in that I have liked. No idea why he’s such a jerk. Maybe it’s the whole Ted Casablanca/Toothy Tile outing.

Lainey talks more about Gyllenhaal on her podcAst but here is a brief mention:

My point is that even though I was standing on the carpet last night with Abhishek Bachchan, megastar to millions around the world, with fans screaming in the background, it didn’t feel like I was coming into that conversation like a second class citizen, which is the normal expectation on these occasions. This, for example, was my experience a few nights ago with Jake Gyllenhaal. I finished that interview feeling subhuman.

I was sitting right in front of her so got to see her all night long. She seemed nice enough and I did notice she was nice to the waiter but man she was nothing to look at. Super plain Jane, as in you would not give her a second glance. She is tall and lithe that part is true (but so am I so that didn't really wow me) but in terms of looks, face, hair, etc....definitely underwhelming.

The other one was a few years ago, we were at the airport and were sitting in the lounge next to Joy Behar, first I am not a fan of hers at all but she was super obnoxious. Loud and crass, made me cringe. I sure would have liked to have seen that in person she is a nice and gentler person than she comes across, it would have made me warm up to her.

Anyone else have such an experience?

At least Gwenyth was nice. It’s nice to know that some celebrities are kind people.

How do you know she was nice? She seemed nice based on sitting at a table for an evening?

I think you can get a sense of someone's personality by watching them eat dinner in public. At least she was not berating the waiter, etc.

I'm super bummed about Gwenyth. I think she is gorgeous.

Let me guess: OP and PP think Ivanka is just so lovely.

I saw her in Italy once, back when she was dating Luke Wilson. She was stunning--golden, willowy and incredibly poised. Everyone stared at her as they walked by. This was a while ago of course.

I saw Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline frolicking on a beach in Barbados, back before they were married. She was teeny tiny and he was semi-annoyed about peopling approaching her but not knowing who he was.

Phoebe Cates's sister, Valerie, was a well know model when she was younger (maybe before Phoebe became a model and actor). I knew Valerie in college and she was the nicest and most helpful person I have ever met.
