When a celebrity in person really underwhelms you

Anonymous
Surprisingly underwhelming: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Not ugly or anything, but you wouldn't look twice if they weren't famous and you spotted them on the street.

Also surprisingly underwhelming: Rihanna. You would just think she looks kind of attractive if you saw her, but definitely not stop you in your tracks.

To the person who was underwhelmed by Jared Leto -- I saw him once on the street and was like DAYUM. He's gorgeous.

Someone who's extremely nice and professional in real life: Cindy Crawford.

Someone who's totally terrifying: Naomi Campbell. Seemed fine, even charming, but everyone at the photo shoot was afraid to say or do anything that would set her off. You've never heard more fake laughter hiding fear in your life.

I’ve seen Tina Fey around the upper west side twice with her kid. She looks exactly the way you would imagine the avg DCUM mom looks!

Ellie Kemper in the grocery store, and while she is beautiful, she looks exactly her age. The basics are there to make it work on camera with makeup etc: good bone structure, good hair and teeth.

An Olsen twin once in a Duane Reade. She was with an entourage so it was immediately obvious. All I remember is that she was tiny.

Alan Alda on the street once, I just heard his voice and knew. I love him and he just looks like a regular guy.

I may have crossed paths with other celebrities, but there’s a whole category of people here about whom it’s impossible to tell if they’re famous or just really wealthy.

I'm also in NYC and also see celebrities here and there.

No underwhelming but surprising: Seeing Jon Stewart and his son (I'm assuming it was his son -- at the time the kid was maybe 10) in the Kmart at Astor Place in Manhattan. And another time seeing him with his wife (again, assuming it was his wife) at a gym on 14th Street in Manhattan -- he was hanging out with her while she worked out on a pilates reformer. Seemed like a nice, down to earth guy in both instances.

Saw Gwenyth before she became a workout guru and she was skinny fat and her face was pallid and her eyes very beady.
Reece Witherspoon needs every inch of help. She is a complete soccer mom in person, no offense to soccer moms but she is completely highstrung SAHM normal. Not hot in trhe least.
Ethan Hawke is part-the-crowd something special.
Tracy Anderson is nice and toned, but sad.

I grew up with Ethan Hawke and disagree, totally average looking. Nice enough, but always wanted to be the center of attention.

Agree. Went to college with him. He's just a regular looking guy. Although I do remember dating to blond women at the same time (literally -- one on each arm). So, yeah, liked attention.

^^Although I do remember him dating two blond women at the same time.

Robert Deniro in NY seems tough and standoffish

Olsen twins so small and so covered up they looked like two little Hungarian grandmothers

Catherine zeta jones and Michael Douglas about 5 years ago she is very striking and he was very good looking

Brooke shields in Georgetown about a year ago pretty nut definitely showing her age

This must've been like 12 years ago or so. I saw Robert Diniero walking with one of his sons on his shoulders. This was on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Was like the two of them were in their own world.

And maybe 5 years ago I saw Liev Shrieber (sp?) with one of his kids on his shoulders crossing the street. On Broadway just south of 14th Street.

Kanye, Beyoncé, and Ryan Seacrest at the Beverly Hilton the night before the Grammys many years ago. Kanye was super tiny. Ryan is even tinier. And Beyoncé looked great.

Perez Hilton in pjs and slippers at the same Beverly Hilton many years ago---when he was still super mean and at the height of his 15 minutes. I literally shut the security door on him so he couldn't access the bungalow rooms (you needed a key, and he didn't have one).

Alecia Keyes rehearsing. Stunning.

I saw Alicia Keys meeting someone in a restaurant. This was before she became known for not wearing make up. She had on zero make up and was incredibly beautiful. Seemed very down to earth.

I took a group yoga class with her. At a not-fancy yoga studio. Very unassuming (tried to not get anyone's attention), but yes, gorgeous.

I used to see him running in Central Park quite a bit, once or twice with a trainer who I knew (ex of my friend) and at a couple races. He seemed a bit dick-ish but the NYC running scene seemed to bring out the dick in lots of otherwise nice people.

Agreed; I used to live in NYC and I have spotted him, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and a long time ago, JFK Jr. running in the park. Also saw John Cusack riding a bike there once. Woody Allen walking (shuffling) many times.

I saw Woody Allen and his wife Soon-Yi, holding hands and (I swear) running and skipping along the street on the Upper East Side. I remember thinking "what the ever-loving f am I seeing."

John Waters sat in front of us on a flight. He was wearing a hat and was very quiet, kept to himself. Recognized him immediately as he was putting his bag in overhead bin.

I was at a party with him decades ago (party given by close friends of his). Such a nice guy.

John Travolta would be meandering in the lobby in the middle of the night, and once he came and ate staff meal with us in the cantine at 3am. He was completely normal and super cool.

On the other end of the spectrum, Steve Martin was a total dick. He insisted that staff call him by his pseudonym and tried to get a server fired when she called him “Mr Martin”. When other guests approached him, he passed out cards that says “This card certifies that I met Steve Martin” without saying anything to them.

George Michael hit on me. Oh, those were the days…

this is insanely dickish!

Sorry - I meant to bold the part I thought was dickish - now done!

Seriously, that is so obnoxious. A friend's daughters take ballet with SM's kid and hadn't said anything about him, except that he's super old and his kid is like 5, lol.

Anonymous wrote:I was a teenage mom who sat down on a bench in Seattle with my son to feed him. Kurt Cobain was sitting there smoking. He put out his cigarette.

I was feeding DS cheerios one by one, one dropped, DS leaned over to look, and Kurt put his arm out at the same time I did to make sure DS didn't fall over. Then he held his hand out for the cheerios and fed DS one by one. DS grinned at him the whole time.

When we were leaving, I said, "Thank you." He said, "Everyone needs a break sometimes." DS and I went down the block to meet my boyfriend. Then we were walking back, Kurt was still sitting there, and I waved to him. He smiled back. I was very young and he was one of the first people who didn't do or say something to make me feel like a stupid, slutty girl who should have known better.

Frances was born the following year.

Thank you for sharing this story. I love Kurt and Nirvana, was in 6th grade when Nevermind was released. Now as an adult instead of an angst ridden teen, I see and appreciate him in a different light.

This is a wonderful story. Thanks.

I met Bradley Cooper right when he arrived at Georgetown after Vilanova. He asked me to coffee (he wasn't a star then.) He had the most amazing eyes, and is beautiful. As in almost looks female but completely hot.

I met Evander Holyfield and Danny Glover this week.

Evander is HOT and a super snazzy dresser. He also gave a great speech including a very touching story about his mother. Very nice to everyone at the social event.

Met Danny Glover on the elevator. I conplimented his tie and he was so lovely. He’s also a snappy dresser and immediateky recognizeable. He looks great but moves like an older man in pain.

My sister slept with Kevin Costner back when he was first starting his career.
