Is being bi-gender a "thing" at your kid's school?

I'm not okay with that kind of hypocrisy. The pro-binary poster needs to work on her own grammar before dictating grammar rules to other people.

?

I don't think that the "boys are boys and girls are girls" PP is primarily upset about the singular they. And if that is what the BABAGAG PP is primarily upset about -- it's already a lost cause anyway. Both the singular they (for example, "Everybody needs to bring their calculator to class tomorrow") and the non-specific they (for example, "Somebody left their purse in the girls' locker room") are well-established in standard American English usage.

(Just to say that I love when ppl identify the non-specific use ... )

We care so much because this part of the liberal agenda is infiltrating schools and brainwashing my kids.

How does stating the biological fact that there are only two genders, male and female make one a bigot? I'm sorry your Gender Studies professor's claim that there are really 36 genders does not make it true.

Sex is biology, gender is a social construct. You are conflating the two.

Of all of the inane, puerile, idiotic phrases to come out of Women's Studies departments at leading (?) universities in the past 10 years, this one takes the cake.

"Gender is a social construct." What a load of BS. I bet some newly-minted 26 year old PhD feels like his/ her career was made with the creation of this phrase.

Not sure. And not sure why it matters?

Intuition would say more acceptable for girls because bullying. But, who knows.

DP. For me it matter because if it's mostly girls, I suspect it says a lot more about the misogyny they're encountering and how difficult it is to be a "girl" in this culture than anything specific about them.

Please. Misogyny among middle schoolers? Get real.

Were you ever a middle schooler? I was, and girls had to deal with a lot of abuse because of middle school culture and the larger culture. And based on what I see our children dealing with, not much has changed. Middle school is when our daughters start having their clothes policed. When they begin puberty and are in trouble because of it. Because breasts are enticing, and rear ends are too obvious. When they're responsible for how others react to them, and not just for how they behave.

My understanding is that Caster Semanya is intersex. It happens. Babies are sometimes born without legs, it doesn't change the fact that humans are bipedal. Intersex and transgender are not the same thing. So far, as I understand it, there is nothing in the research indicating that people who think they are transgender are intersex.

Caster Semanya is at an advantage competing against biological women. Caster Semanya was raised as a woman and had no reason to think she wasn't a woman and was competing as fairly as she could.

Really? It's exactly the same thing. Please try to actually explain how it's different, rather resorting to juvenile name calling.

Here's a video by black transwoman Kat Blaque, answering your question in a more eloquent way than I probably could: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZEsCWWskbY&feature=youtu.be In short, she points out that though both are based in societal expectations and reactions, race is--at least in part--biologically passed from parent to child, while gender isn't.

I'll take another opportunity to point out that while the conversation in this thread has widened to include transgender issues, the majority of questions and responses here are about t(w)eens who are gender non-conforming, gender fluid, or gender neutral, and have no interest in transitioning.

Didn't watch the video. But there are all sorts of genetics at work that can cause a dark skinned child to be born from light skinned parents. A white woman can birth a baby who looks exactly like his black father. Just as a woman can birth a girl, just like her mom, or a boy, just like his dad. How you've presented her argument makes it seem ridiculous.

Than why do people even have to concern themselves with gender. If as you say, gender only has to do with how masculine or feminine a person feels, why is it necessary to give that a special label? One that some people would actually like to put on documents. There have always been non-girly women and effeminate men, up until now I don't think any of them would have minded calling themselves anything other than men/women who weren't into the same things most people of their sex were. Based on your definition of gender, I think it's a pretty meaningless concept and should just be put out to pasture.

Who cares if one is passed down from parent to child while the other is not? They are both biological realities concerning a person that can be proved by DNA testing.

Yes, there is a broader recognition these days of gender fluidity or nonconforming.

OP is ignorant?

This gender fluidity shit is pure crap.

My daughter has been telling me stories since 6th grade. She's heading into 8th.

And no, I don't hate gays. My cousin is gay and my best guy pal died of AIDS in the 90s. My cousin agrees that this is simply a fad that needs to go away.

ignorant? Questioning isn't being ignorant.

You're an ass, PP.

Gender isn't?? Do you know how babies are made?

+1000. Despite what liberals think, gender is not assigned at birth, but actually passed along from each parent X chromosome from mother and either an X or Y from the father.

Because I don't go around telling anorexic girls they are fat or telling schizophrenic that the voice they hear are real. And I am certainly not going to go along with the delusional thoughts that a man wearing a dress is a woman.

Caster is evidence that sexuality is fluid. She is an extreme example, but there are many less overt examples.

Caster has a vagina, but cannot bear children. With surgery to create a penis, her testes could be functional and she can be a father

So gender police, which bathroom should she use?

This one is a new story for me.

Yup. Some of them are trying to shock the olds, and hey look, it's working!

It sure is. DS is 16 and has two transgender friends. As in considering hormone therapy.

He also knows one girl who claims to be gender fluid. She says it for attention.

I was just talking to my friends about this yesterday. One works in a high school and says it's safe now so kids are coming out.
