It happened in my high school my senior year. A girl was pulled into a side stairwell and raped during class. It was discovered when class let out and someone found her there, crying. There were no cameras. It was in a part of the school where there was not regular traffic during class (i.e., no bathrooms or external doors nearby, no hall monitors other than by the door by the main office, no cameras).

After this happened, they put hall monitors in every hallway and required everyone to have a visible ID card and hall pass to be in the halls at all.

Holy shit that's awful, I got a pit in my stomach just reading that!
I hope they caught the guy or she knew who he was?
How awful...

Good. I did the same and added Drudge Report and Rush. Something has to be done. This is completely unacceptable. I encourage all to email the MoCo School Board about the current policy of 17 or 18 year olds being able to register as hs freshman. I did. Their email is: boe@mcpsmd.org

Thank you. This is critical. Let's all do it.

AGREED!
My 5th grader has an almost 14 year old in hr class & she's 11!

I definitely understand your concerns, and I don't think it makes sense to register 18 year olds as freshmen unless it's at an alternative campus for older than traditional students. If I understand the policy correctly, all students older than 21 must finish their high school education at another campus, and an 18 year old would turn 21 by the time they were in their senior year if they started as a Freshman so why not start them at the school they'll end up at anyway?

However, regarding kids on class with older students, in high school that happens even if everyone is in the grade typical for their chronological age since most elective classes are open to grades 9-12 or 10-12. I don't think it's that unusual for a 14/15 year old sophomore to be in at least a few classes with seniors, who are likely somewhere between 17 and 19.

There's something definitely wrong with a school system that allows that kind of craziness.

And 14 is only the age they admit to....

Let's see how much longer Montgomery County residents put up with this nonsense.

Crimes committed by illegal aliens never make national news. Ever

Here is the policy:
Children age 5 by September 1, 2016, and not age 21 on the first day of school are eligible for enrollment in MCPS for the 2016-17 school year.

Do they place these 20 and 21 year old students in high school alongside 14 year olds?

I used to be a high school teacher in another state. Typically there is a point when a student becomes too old to be retained in a grade and would be referred to an alternative program of some sort. At 18 in 9th grade, this person would exceed the legal age of school attendance before they could to 12th grade. So it really makes no sense for them not to be in an alternative school. Makes me question what is going on a RHS, which is the school we're zoned for. Thankfully DC is still in ES.

We are also zoned for RHS. What were the kids doing in school all day anyway? He didn't speak Wnglish, so was he actually taking/attending classes?

I teach ESOL in FCPS. A student can enroll in regular high school as long as they are not 18. They can stay until they're 22. If they have no credits from their country, they will be enrolled in 9th grade even if they are 17. They take ESOL classes, but it is a slow process, especially if they have little education from their home country. Not sure how long these students had been in school, but if it was just since September, it is likely he knew very little English. These are not 6 year olds starting in 1st grade. And yes, for some of these kids attendance is an issue and they really don't care about school. So even if they were in school, it doesn't mean they were working hard to do well.

My friend's daughter is at Gaithersburg and she says most only come in for breakfast, don't go to classes, and leave after lunch. Administration is scared because many are linking up with the El-Salvadorian gangs. There are no parents to report to. No discipline. No care. They rarely graduate and there is a lot of school funding that goes towards them. I just don't understand it. We can't help everyone. If we could, I rather have all of Sudan over here. There are just too many corrupt third world countries. Ours seems to be turning into one lately.

They don't care or at least they are too scared to care. When you care, you are called a racist IMMEDIATELY. That is always the retort. They just keep raising taxes and the middle class is shrinking faster here than most places.

I really wish legal immigrants would fight this battle. They worked long and hard to be here and are being tarnished by illegal immigrants.

And "tarnished" is putting it mildly.
Dragged into the gutter is more like it.

Please speak up, legal immigrants.
Your continued success depends on it.

All race/immigration issues aside, a 14 year old child was just raped in one of our schools. She fought and tried to cling to a sink and they dragged her into a stall to rape her. She screamed. How did this happen- how is it possible that a girl child can be raped while fighting and screaming in the middle of the day and it can go undetected? MCPS, you better be conducting security assessments for your facilities. Right now. There are plenty of MCPS parents who are security experts (like me)- lots of FBI agents, cops, military- who would do this for free. So don't let cost be a factor.

I came to this thread late and wanted to find "real news" confirmation about the allegations (i.e. that the perps are illegal) without paging through all the posts. I think it's telling that I couldn't easily find anything on wapo.com.

+1 to this

Insane that this can happen. At a school. During school hours.
