Immigration - how is it such a huge issue in this race?

Alexandria, Virginia. Illegal immigrants (and those brought here under the admins insane TPS programs) have degraded this City and is crushing our public services and infrastructure. But, I agree that DC proper’s abject failure to address crime by US citizens personally affects more people in DC than the illegal immigrant invasion.

How has it affected you?

I have children in public schools which are overcrowded and unable to educate. The district stupidly chooses to allow 22 year old ELL students to go to high school. So my 14 year old sophomore girl is in gym class with a 22 year old. My car insurance rates are increasing. Access to medical care is diminished and long waits at the ER. There was a body found in our local playground a few years back - gang related. The number of cars parked on residential streets is insane. I can go on. Again - the City’s lack of governance is the heart of the problem, but the continuous stream of people exacerbates it.

I think you’re lying. If you were truly a recent immigrant you’d know that immigrants are not ‘criminals’, they are those fleeing poverty and war and seeking a better life, just as you did. And my great grandparents did. My great grandfather was illegal.

I mentioned criminals because as an immigrant myself I would NEVER think of immigrants as a whole as criminals. I do think, and it's insane to me that this would be controversial, we should vet people's criminal backgrounds when they come in, as is done for legal immigrants. How is this remotely controversial?

I am well aware of Trump and Vance and all the crap they say. Do not assume someone is Trump and Vance or voting for them because they think immigration is in fact an issue in the race. I am voting for Harris btw. I don't think either party is especially motivated to fix anything. There is fear-mongering on one side, and not enough done on the other to actually remove criminal immigrants (again, a SMALL portion of immigrants, immigrants as a whole are more law-abiding than US born citizens!) used by GOP to give us all a bad name.

As I think you would know, schools can vary greatly within a city or school system-- even schools within a couple of miles of each other. Do your children attend a public school in which 75+ % of the students are identified as learning English as a second language and possibly Title 1 as well?

These children are spread across schools. I don’t think you understand how capable the school system is. An influx of a relatively small percentage of children is not going to break it. It is pure propaganda to make it seem like it’s a ‘crisis’ for everyone. Is it an important issue? Sure. Is it a crisis ? Nope

25% of the students in FCPS are ESL. That is not sustainable.

It has to be more than this. All the ES in our pyramid are over 40%.

What a patronizing post. Mass illegal immigration is a threat to the jobs and wages of blue collar workers, even Bernie Sanders admitted it before the Democrats went crazy by supporting open borders. The schools are terrible and full of ELL, housing prices are very high, car insurance rates keep rising, etc. I want to move, but I have no confidence that the Democrats won’t flood my new community and school system with more indigent migrants. I have no problem with legal immigration of people who have skills we need, speak English and are able to provide for themselves. I am tremendously against mass illegal immigration of unskilled migrants into the country. Liberals have disregarded people’s concerns over immigration and then turn around and wonder why Donald Trump has so much support. People disliking Democrat economic and immigration policies are why he has so much support, but you just turn around and insult all of us who support him while diminishing our concerns.
