Immigration - how is it such a huge issue in this race?

Anonymous
Apologies if there’s another thread on this…

But really? It seems like people I know who are not particularly affected by this issue are focused on it as a deciding factor in the election. It’s immigration, immigration, immigration.

Is immigration that terrible for our country? In my world at least, the most obvious related issue I see is that small businesses don’t have enough labor. So immigration is a good thing.

Maybe I’m myopic. Can someone please explain?

Trump made it an issue because he had nothing else to run on. The economy is relatively strong, and all the other facets of the country are operating well. So he got the GOP to tank its own immigration bill so instead of addressing the problem, he made it worse.

Harris has said she would sign that bill.
Trump has not. Why not?

And in the mean time, we have had nothing from the right but race baiting, zenophophia and crazy "they are eating the cats and dogs" BS.

Don’t be ridiculous. Of course Americans are upset about immigration. Parents don’t want their schools overcrowded from illegal immigration.

They add money to the GDP and are working hard for little pay. Before heading to work I always go to WAWA. AT 530 am you will see so many hard working illegals at WAWA on their way to work. Trump or his allies won't even tell us they will deport illegals or anything. Most of small town that support him, have very little immigration so they don't know really know them.

How do you know they are “illegals”? Do you go around Wawa every morning asking to see people’s legal documents??

OP, you seem very uninformed. Water is good, oxygen is good, but both will kill you if you get too much. “Immigration” is an extremely broad term, and includes all types of immigration. There can be too much of even good things, and there are negative effects when there is too much at once, lack of vetting, and fraud going on. For most voters there is a difference between legal and illegal immigration. The Biden administration has also increased immigration via dubious means such as giving discretionary parole to many hundreds of thousands of people who otherwise would not be able to enter. The whole world is watching it and sees that those who enter, regardless of whether they have a valid claim to be here, get to stay.
The math is no longer as clear about whether it is good for the economy.

Of course we should have many routes of immigration. But we need to focus on giving our humanitarian benefits to the most deserving individuals who are ACTUAL refugees, not people showing up on our doorstep with fake/dubious asylum claims.

Same way the GOP invents issues that come and go with ease: propaganda. Even though the underlying issues with immigration stay pretty much the same (as they have for at least 150 years of immigration to America, and before that I don’t feel like I know enough about how new immigrants fit in, but obviously they were still coming!): schools affected, doctors can’t speak the language of their patients, housing, the general friction of new cultures fitting into established cultures. That doesn’t change with anything like the speed with which right wing media picks up and discards immigration as an issue.

They lost abortion as a way to get their hateful voters to the polls, so now it’s just trans issues and immigration.

I don't know how it wouldn't be. It's not acceptable to have so many people effectively crash the border completely unvetted, then stay, getting better benefits and healthcare than so many Americans. It affects recent legal immigrants and poor Americans more than other populations as well. There is absolutely zero excuse for it not being a priority for either party.

Too bad the loser you worship nuked the bill to address all that, huh.

DP. Too bad I’m not stupid enough to believe that bill was any good at all.

Are you one of the federal employees who mandated that public schools couldn't ask parents or guardians for any specific documentation before enrolling children in school and receiving all kinds of services?

So where’s the “good” bill he never signed when he was in the office? It’s his bread and butter, why would he be behind doing anything about it?

Why is abortion such a big issue? I don’t understand it. Why do you care about the issues you do?

Immigration is a big issue because of the uncontrolled border under Biden-Harris. We’ve had millions enter the country illegally under their leadership. We have no idea who these people are. They are causing issues with housing, schooling, crime, and burdening communities with spending taxpayer money to provide for them.

Biden and Harris’s complete disregard for the border crisis is what made me resolved to vote against them. For years, they gaslighted the public that there wasn’t a problem at the border, all while we had 2+ million illegal immigrants crossing the border yearly! They nuked executive orders that Trump issued to control the border, insisted that there was nothing they could do about the border, and let the crisis rage for 3.5 years before issuing an executive order as an election ploy. Their actions have been inexcusable.

I’m going this week to vote early for Trump to get this disastrous administration out of office. They are a threat to our basic sovereignty, national security, public safety and welfare of our communities. The most basic responsibility of a government is to control its borders. And this administration has completely failed! A nation without borders is not a nation at all, but Biden-Harris don’t care and have invited this massive illegal immigration wave.

Why did Biden and Harris loosen border policies?

People have been pissed about illegal immigration for years. Biden really f’d us by failing to secure the border. He didn’t address it until the eleventh hour when it was too late. It’s not like Democrats were going to sit home in this election had he come down hard on the issue. Trump knew he could win on immigration which is why he told the GOP to table the bi-partisan bill. It should have been the first issue that Biden addressed as part of his presidency. Instead he invited more illegal immigrants in. Thanks Biden!
