Widespread looting in Philadelphia right now

Well yeah, that, plus a bunch of other factors. Japanese people are a super homogenous population that basically restricts inmigration. They don’t like to “upset the Apple cart” in public with their polite ways. Everyone wears a mask on the subway and even did that before Covid, basically out of social obligation and general thoughtfulness. I know I’m generalizing here, but there is this sort of unspoken rule. It has to do with their society operating for the greater good, their corporate culture, saving face culture, etc. Theyre just more reserved and don’t get as fking crazy as we do. They have no guns.

Basically they’re so different from America. They don’t have our history of strife and pockets of poverty and all that stuff. But yes also they punish crime and we don’t these days.

Access to abortion strongly correlates with reduction in crime in the next generation.

Ha! True.

Democrats need to signify to their elected representatives that they've had enough of restorative justice, and they want harsh consequences so our streets can be safe.

Why the heck is that too much to ask?!?

It’s getting to the point where they will demand that. The impetus for this progressive justice reform/restorative justice stuff was because of some instances of police abuse and also because of the disparate rates of incarceration. It’ll went into overdrive post-2020. But obviously, Occam’s Razor has shown that lo and behold, lessening penalties through no bail, allowing speeders to keep licenses, liberal das not prosecuting etc…these novel methods are complete and total failures. I’m sorry it’s sucks, but we need to go back to just taking criminals off the streets. There is no better solution. Trying to fix poverty as the solution is a fools errand. Obviously, we should try to do that. However, just letting people shoplift by basically not going after thieves or seeing liberals city politicians raising the penalty for felony shoplifting to $1000 is not helpful.

We need more prisons. Honestly, that's the only solution at this point. This entire population of criminals should be swept up and locked away. They have no value-add to society.

It's called BAIL. Welcome to reality. This is not new. This is not exclusive to any political party.

But setting a low ball bail is exclusive to certain ideologies. Set that crap sky high and let them sit.

Serious question, how many inmates are you willing to house and feed? The average cost per inmate is $130,000 per year.

Why feed and house inmates at $130K? That's a waste of money and resources. Build a mega prison with cheap overhead and throw them in there. There's no reason to spend any money on these folks when there's no return on investment. And we can stop death penalty appeals. That is a time suck.

We already have mega prisons. Do you mean we should build concentration camps and gas people for looting Athleta?

That would be considerable cheaper. I doubt this is their first merry-go-round. These are likely juveniles on their 4th, 5th, + criminal incident with no future prospects. We do not need them. What we do need are more mega prisons. Make them for profit if needed. Prison labor can be used for hire to make it self sustaining. There's got to be a solution because they do not belong in society. We cannot put retailers or services in low income communities because the people that live there with rob and loot these very institutions. They continue to dig their own graves.

This is a terrifying glimpse into the Fox News-addled brain of your average Republican. Jesus Christ.

seriously these people are nuts. It’s getting scary how uneducated and unprincipled these people are. It’s all ID.

People angry about organized crime sprees going unpunished are the unprincipled ones? Makes sense! How’s life in the suburbs? Probably pretty safe away from where crime actually happens. We are all impressed with your righteous indignation.

Why do you keep saying they are not being charged? Can’t you read the arrest reports?

Because 67% of crimes went unprosecuted in the district in 2022 by a liberal Biden da. Because we don’t have a fking working crime lab for years. Because our progressive city council has implemented the Youth Rehab act to let out criminals early. Or the second look act to shield violent criminal records. Because we let speeders keep their license with $12k in speeding tickets and they hit and killed three people on rock creek.

Pay fking attention. Your Johnny come lately knowledge to how things work with crime and punishment in DC shows you have no clue how lenient this town is and how offenders get off time and time again.

Because we have a progressive council l

You seem to be on some personal tirade but we are discussing Philadelphia here.

I'm a Democrat (and DC resident), but sadly, what they posted specific to DC is true and contributing to a significant year on year crime wave in DC when crimes are receding in other cities.

Thank you. And what does Philly have in common? Let’s all say it together: progressive. Criminal. Justice.

America is watching and getting really fking tired of it. You want Youngkin to win? This is how that dude gets drafted and wins. I know abortion is a hot button issue, but seriously how many more news stories of organized smash and grab can America watch on tv until they have enough and vote with common sense on crime. The only thing that works is strict, immediate punishment, not trying to endlessly study and pontificate on the root causes of crime. While you do that another crime is committed. Another CVS leaves an urban center.

NP. I’m in California and I’m done too. I have registered independent and stopped Democratic Party donations across the country, which I used to do regularly. I’ve had enough.

So… that’s 2 votes for mass graves!

JFC. Liberals have an insane way of inventing reasons to be hytsterical. Not a single person suggested concentration camps or mass graves. There was an extremest liberal poster who said:
"We already have mega prisons. Do you mean we should build concentration camps and gas people for looting Athleta?" to which the response was "That would be considerable cheaper..."

So, yeah, the far left brought extremism into the conversation and it was met with equal stupidity. God damn, you guys are loons.

Agreed.

This entire conversation is basically progressive left sad about poverty and not wanting to arrest or prosecute anyone for crime vs. more moderate or right folks basically saying “how about we hold people accountable for their crimes.” And yet we are labeled unprincipled. Insane.

How many inmates are you willing to fund with your salary? How much are you willing to shell to stop the theft of leggings? The cost is $130K per head. I mean these are basic questions that you moderate folks curtail.

You keep asking the same question PPs have answered you. I am willing to pay but think prisons need to create other sources of revenue. WE also need to trim the cost of keeping each prisoner. $130K is ridiculous and far more than what that criminal would be making/spending out of prison so why do they get a 6 figure salary in prison? Trim the excess and make larger mega prisons to cut the overhead per person. IN all, paying $130K per person is definitely worth the cost considering the damage done by each prisoner on the outside. I'd pay $130K to minimize murder and rapes in our communities.

Most of that 130K cost is in the salary and benefits for the correction officers to maintain control and keep the prisoners compliant and imprisoned. The other costs such as housing, heat, cooling, food is probably negligible in comparison to the labor costs for the COs. Are you suggesting that the COs should be paid less with fewer benefits to get those costs down?

It’s probably for profit prisons. People who steal and commit violent crimes (like those men who have raped but the evidence to find them sits in thousands of unprocessed rape kits across the country. It’s weird how rape never gets treated seriously.) should be put away in state funded prisons, not mostly peaceful drug offenders or petty theft (which is still disproportionately prosecuted) sitting in for profit prisons so that a few people might be enriched.

I totally misread your sentence and when I read the article I thought “what in the right wing misreading…” but CORRECT. Democrats are not condoning this.

Republicans are sure excited by it though.

Hmm. It doesn’t seem like your version of reality aligns with what’s actually happening. https://www.findlaw.com/traffic/traffic-tickets/reckless-driving.html Now this doesn’t actually show how speeding/reckless driving are prosecuted and I wasn’t able to find that, but maybe you can.

And Texas’s threshold for felony theft is $2500. Seems a little higher than that of “liberal cities,” no? In fact when South Carolina raised their felony shoplifting limit to $2000, their crime continued to drop by 15%, and rates of average value of thefts stayed around $200. From this same site it seems that addressing substance abuse is a massive way to prevent crime. https://blog.agilenceinc.com/the-real-impact-of-rising-felony-shoplifting-thresholds-on-retail

It appears that things are not quite like you present them.

The Japanese preempt inhumane prison treatment by killing themselves. That’s why it’s the suicide capital of the world.

By the way, Norway does not even arm its cops and has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Awn! Poor wittle criminals.

You're a ghoul. You are dehumanizing another person. That is a crime worse than theft.

What the F are you even blathering about? The man shot by the officer was Hispanic, lol.

He also had a knife. There is clear body cam footage too.

But let's not let facts get in the way of people rioting to get free TVs and Apple phones!

You are a disgusting.

These weren't protesters and you know it. THAT is disgusting. Feigning ignorance just to score political points.

Philadelphia had to close all liquor stores that night to keep employees safe.

And Japan is about as homogenous as it comes. No infighting between different ethnic groups.
