Great question.

Ok I’ll try: with so many simultaneous crisss facing our nation at once, and absolutely no evidence of any sort of issues of voting fraud, why would you even create a potential barrier to voting? People have been voting “without id” since Roman times. You don’t need to “fix” voting in America, it’s literally one of the last few things we haven’t screwed up completely.

Free government assistance obtain the ID — or acceptable forms of ID that don’t disproportionately impact any group of people. It doesn’t make sense to me that a student ID with a picture issued by a state university would not be acceptable - when a gun license is just fine.

So, older person born at home in a tiny town in, let’s say Alabama. No birth certificate, no Baptismal record, might have a family Bible indicating their birthdate. The onus should not be on this citizen to spend the considerable time and money it would take — if it is even possible— to meet the standards for obtaining a Real ID in, say, Hawaii, in order to fulfill a drummed up solution to a problem that doesn’t appreciably exist. It’s worth pointing out, yet again, that many of the forms of ID deemed acceptable require a birth certificate before they will be issued.

For the circumstances you listed, they'd have to be pushing 100, even in a tiny rural town in Alabama.

Nope, there are people born in the 1950's and 1960's who were born like this. Anyone home born or born in rural areas where parents didn't "register" their children when they were born, and were never in the system in terms of social security etc. There are more than you think.

I swear, there are a lot of right wingers demanding IDs to vote who have no clue how so many in this country were born and raised, particularly in rural areas.

Maybe time to get out of the bubble, no?

The Constitution also mandates the right to vote for all citizens. This has NEVER been an issue except to the racist right wing that continues to conjure BS to add restrictions to suppress the vote for those who don't support them.

That isn't how it is supposed to work, and to date, there is no validation of their claims of fraud and abuse.

Virtually every industrialized democracy requires voter ID - except the US and UK. Of course that’s how it’s “supposed to work.”

Because there are a large number of undocumented immigrants in the country. If you're not checking IDs, how would anyone know if they're voting?

Wow PP it looks like you have finally found the perfect crime- one in which there is absolutely no evidence of whatsoever despite many well funded people and entities searching for it! Maybe you should write a best selling thriller with that imagination.

It isn’t being done in good faith. It is intended to suppress black and Latino and young voters. It may look neutral to you but the people pushing it know that their state and local election officials will always apply rules more strictly to obstruct black voters. They will make it harder for some people to get the required IDs or to update IDs and they will continue to put up other obstacles to suppress black votes, e.g. rigging precinct size, location, capacity, staffing to ensure long lines and waits. These racists cannot be trusted to enforce election laws fairly and equally. They have no intention of doing so. This is not targeted at fraud. It is targeted at depressing turnout among certain types of eligible voters.

NP but PP it doesn’t mean someone lives in a bubble if they don’t know an elderly person born in a small rural town with no SS number. I have plenty of elderly relatives, both Trump supporters and democrats, and none of them know such people. And no they aren’t privileged unless being a HS educated plumber in NYC adds you to the coastal elites we hear about so often.

So this is about what you FEEL their goals are. There's a whole lot of hypothesizing and impugning motives in these discussions. There are many states that require voters to have ID that are not Republican led states.

DP. I have not seen one reason for voter ID laws backed up with evidence for their necessity on this thread. It’s ironic that you are so dismissive of FEELINGS because that’s the only reason you want voter ID.

And if someone doesn’t have a birth certificate then it seems like they wouldn’t be able to get a bank account either. We should fix those issues, not have insecure elections because of it.

We don't have insecure elections. It is a myth. The only insecurity in the 2020 election were a couple of GOP voters in PA, another GOP from Florida who voted in GA and some wacko lady in Nevada.

There is literally no widespread voter fraud and thus no problem to fix. The only reason these bills are happening is so the GOP can suppress votes and try to remain in power.

What a lie. Why are you so vehemently against American citizens being required to have ID in order to vote? Why does this threaten you so?
DP

It doesn't but if you don't solve the problem of making ID's accessible for all who are entitled to them, then it is a form of voter suppression. But why do you keep citing the bogeyman of the hordes of illegals voting when there is no proof of any such activity taking place?

If ID was provided to all who need it - free, from the government - I wonder what other excuses you’d manufacture.

Wonder away! I guess that’s far easier than offering actual practical suggestions and solutions— even to spuriously manufactured problems.

If no, there is zero reason to make any of us show an ID.

What has changed in the intervening years that necessitates voter ID?

Not one Republican has addressed these points.

Because they are utterly stupid and irrelevant “points” which have nothing to do with present day? Just a thought.

The immigration situation has not changed so much since the early 2000s when Bush wanted to offer a kind of amnesty.

Nothing has changed significantly in 20 years except for Republicans losing power unless they gerrymander and restrict voting

Instead of saying something is irrelevant and stupid, how about you explain what has changed so drastically that we suddenly need these laws. I really doubt you're going to find any facts to support the argument but I would listen if you tried

The immigration situation absolutely has changed. The number of people present illegally has changed considerably. Democrats have gone out of their way to ensure that we cannot accurately track the number of illegal immigrants currently in our country. And, in some jurisdiction, they are allowed to vote in local elections.

We want to ensure that only those legally qualified to vote do so. Yes, it is that simple.

Amazing that anyone would argue against this. And yet, they do.

It’s also amazing how hard some people will work in an effort to disenfranchise others from legally voting. And yet, they do.
