immigrant (legal) here
There are many undemocratic aspects about the US electoral system compared to the rest of the world, such as the electoral college, voting on a workday (Tuesday), winner take all districts, gerrymandering, unequal distribution of polling places, etc. If this system were in place in any other country, the US government would be denouncing it as undemocratic. Having to register to vote (instead of being automatically registered) and requiring official IDs are also measures that limit voting. Now, what if instead of whining about the voter ID laws promoted by the GOP, the Biden administration issued federal voting IDs for everybody that needs one? It could even come with a $100 gift card to motivate people to get registered and their ID. It can't be that hard. In the rest of the world everyone has an ID and people tend to vote in larger percentages than in the US. Look at Bolivia. Yes, Bolivia! It is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, with nearly 70 percent of its population living in poverty. About 23 percent of the population lives on less than $1 a day and 42 percent on less than $2 a day. In their last election in 2019, they had 88.31 % voter participation. In contrast, 62 % of adults voted in the last US election. |
| Sounds good to me, OP. I’ve long said that the US needs to issue all citizens IDs. Not sure about giving everyone $100 gift cards for the privilege of voting, though. But universal voter ID is an absolute must. Now watch liberals list reason after reason why it “just wouldn’t work.” 3-2-1... |

You need ID to cash a check.
You need ID to buy alcohol. You need ID to buy tobacco. You need ID to buy a gun. You need ID to get into many govt buildings. You need ID to get onto secure federal property. You need ID to rent or buy an apartment or home. You need ID to get on a plane. You need ID to get a library card. You need ID to buy a fishing license. You need ID to open a bank account. You need ID to receive govt benefits like WIC and EBT. You need ID to apply for a job. You need ID to buy or rent a car. You need ID to go into any school building in the country. You need ID to get medical treatment. You need ID to apply to colleges. You need ID to get into a many bars/clubs. You need ID to get into many community centers / pools But voting doesn’t require an ID. If you oppose a law requiring showing an ID in order to vote, then you are for voter fraud. There is no other plausible reason. |

I can be honest with myself and admit that how I feel about voting rights is how some feel about gun rights: it’s a constitutionally protected right. And just as you have people whining how restricting semi-automatic guns and imposing limits on guns punishes the law-abiding citizen, I would argue that requiring a drivers license punishes those who choose not to drive (which happens to be those who are poor, elderly, or live in areas where a car is not required to get by, like cities). We need to work harder to enfranchise every citizen instead of limiting access because it suits a political agenda.
We already have a National, unique identifier: social security number. We use it for taxes, we can find a way to use it for voting. In the meantime, stop suppressing law-abiding citizen right to vote because some are butthurt they lost an election. |
Ever heard of a state issued ID?? It's what people who don't drive use. |
| Voter ID is very popular with Americans. It's only the loudest voices who complain. People want to be able to trust their elections. |
I think there are two major ways elections are tampered with: “physical” ballot tampering and social media influencing (mostly by our enemies abroad). American intelligence has not found evidence of the former; why not put your energy into doing something about the latter? |

Voting is a right, not a privilege. Furthermore, where is any evidence that there is even voter fraud to begin with? This is just a new way to disenfranchise black people. |
Oh, honey. This has both to do with “losing an election,” though it’s understandable that you enjoy repeating that with relish. No one cares. This has everything to do with requiring an ID to vote - something that every other major country requires. It doesn’t have to be a driver’s license. The DMV also issues ID cards. But sure, continue making excuses that are increasingly absurd. |
| *has nothing to do |
Ah, there it is! The same BS excuses. |
How many black people don't have a state issued ID? And why can't they get one if they currently don't have one? |
| If the US can expend the resources to locate family members here in the US and send incoming migrants to them, then surely they can make sure all citizens have an ID. |
Yes but why oh why are you so worried about this issue NOW? We all know why........ This is not rocket science, there’s a fair solution out there. it’s just politically advantageous to enact policies that adversely impact people who wouldn’t vote for your candidate anyway. |
