Let’s stipulate that all of this is true. Why would you believe that the Assembly would not protect abortion rights? |
Well it’s true. You can look up her record yourself. Or read any of the Sun or Post articles about this. To override a governors veto, you need 3/5s of both houses. I’d rather not rely upon her spokesman’s word (which isn’t in her website or Twitter btw) or upon 3/5s of both houses overriding her veto when I can just as easily vote in a pro choice Democrat who will protect the right to choose. |
The governor does not have the power to unilaterally change the law. And Maryland had veto-proof Democratic majorities in both chambers. So even if she was intent on doing what you fear she will do, there is no way she could do it until a lot of other Maryland Democrats agree with her. So the issue is moot. |
It’s not moot to me. Good thing I can vote for someone who is pro choice. |
You certainly can and should, when you cast your ballot for state senate and assembly. Governor doesn’t matter that much. |
Exactly. |
Right. Look at the debacle that was the Montgomery County budget this year. Absolutely no fiscal responsibility. When they say a budget is a "moral document," they just mean they play to people's emotions funding half-baked programs that don't work, but feel good to talk about. I'm dying for some fiscally responsible leadership. If fiscal responsibility is now called DINO, give me a DINO. |
It’s not if legislature wants to enshrine new protections for abortion. And it’s not if she wants to get creative with executive orders and administrative action meant to make getting an abortion harder. She can’t outlaw abortion on her own, but she absolutely can be disruptive. There will be massive pressure on every Republican everywhere to do everything they can on this front. |
Here are two important points. First, you may not know that bills in Maryland can become laws without Governor signature. Second, again, the Assembly has a veto-proof Democratic majority. If there is pro-choice legislation that you fear won’t pass in Maryland, the answer would not be because of the Governor and it would not matter if the Governor was Democrat or Republican. Your concern would only be due to not trusting the Democrats in the Assembly to be as pro-choice as you are. And to br honest, generally speaking Maryland is a very centrists Democratic state so that fear is well founded but also does not put you in the mainstream |
This addresses that legislation issue but not the executive/administrative action issue. A Republican governor with national ambitions (and what governor doesn't have national ambitions?) will be under enormous pressure to use the tools at their disposal to undermine abortion rights (not to mention LGBTQ civil rights). And there's a Supreme Court majority ready and willing to back up any anti-abortion actions challenged in court. |
| So the choice will ultimately be Franchot or Perez? |
You wish. The next poll will show a 5% bump for Wes Moore which should put him in the lead. |
| I think the SC ruling today helps Franchot big time. No way in hell can MD go to either of the Republicans. People who would've considered Moore are going to strategically vote for the moderate Franchot. |
This makes no sense. Wes Moore is a centrist candidate. Franchot is actually more liberal. And why would overturning Roe make someone vote more moderate? Or make someone want to vote for an old white guy even? |
