What is wrong with this world?

This is not a world problem, it is a distinctly American problem.

How does a sweet kid go from this, an apparent small town boy scout, to a killer in 4 years? I would bet bullying and cyber-bullying beginning in high school.

In 2017, Crumbley, from Oxford, spoke to a local newspaper about a school project he was working on with four of his classmates. The group worked with a nonprofit in town called Blessings in a Backpack, which fills backpacks with food and distributes them to “at risk” kids.

Reading this article really shows us where the mind of the parents where.

This is not an excuse for killing. Apparently, the parents were at the school in the morning, so they knew.

Yes, the mom’s letter suggests she was disturbed (in addition to being a trumper.)

My DH calls it the land of white entitlement, people itching for a fight. It has a rural redneck vibe.

Interesting. But isn’t the real issue here that an aggrieved person - regardless of background, race, SES - was able to get a gun, bring it to school, and in a matter of minutes kill and severely injure over a dozen human beings.

Mentally ill or not, bullied or not, etc, etc we NEED TO LIMIT GUNS. This is something the whole world gets except the US where gun lobbyists have managed to convince Americans that gun ownership is more important than human life.

Whether or not these were Trump supporters, they had access to guns. Which allowed, in turn, a child to walk into school and in a matter of minutes commit a mass murder.

Of course there's no excuse. But nobody will even discuss the bullying factor. Bullying is probably too soft of a word; tormenting and abusing the kid all day every day is probably more accurate.

And they claim it is a tight-knit community. Hogwash. It's one of the largest high schools in Michigan with a very distinct and stark haves vs have nots hierarchy.

Maybe no one will discuss because you’re making assumptions and creating a story without actually knowing anything?

Parents should be charged. Having weapons at home makes YOU culpable.

America needs more asylums and psych hospitals, not less gun, though less gun would help too. As it is right now- people with mental health issues literally have no where to go. Especially if under 18. Parents can’t manage this. There is literally no where to go and no help if you have a child struggling with mental illness and they are violent, other than to call the police. But really- that is not all that helpful

The letter quoted in the article written by the suspect’s mother (stepmother?) to Trump was vile.

And she is convinced that they are middle class, no, you are poor. This is the problem, the mother has identified with a segment of population that she has nothing in common with. She speaks of immigrants, etc.

It was discussed in-depth after columbine and led to zero tolerance programs that resulted in the bullied getting punished as much as the bullied.

Mental health professional here-you’re completely wrong. More psych beds would be great but in no universe a remedy to this problem. what is needed: less access to guns.

Guns are not only the biggest issue, they'd be the easiest problem to solve if this country had any common sense.

That said... of course I am interested in hearing the motive and knowing if bullying was at the heart of it (we all assume it was). Not because it excuses anything-he should go to prison for life and his parents deserve jail time as well-but because schools need to step up an do MUCH more to stop bullying, especially the severe cases. Most don't result in mass killings, or even suicides though that is also a huge problem, but plenty lead to years of unnecessary torment and suffering. Schools do very little and they should take some of the blame too.

I disagree with the poster that keeps saying no one will talk about bullying. People talk talk talk, but it's all lip service. Everyone has zero tolerance policies, but it's all BS. It is time to take it seriously and prevent all sorts of suffering.
