NYT article on LCPS high school re: racism

Anonymous
This young man comes across as quite the narcissist. Check out this You Tube video where he first tells a white girl (not the one in the NYT story) that he doesn't like her, while recording on his phone, and then says "don't make me expose you to the entire community" to her when she calls him "dumb" a few minutes later (0:52). He sure doesn't seem to treat girls with much respect.

The life of the white girl in the NYT article is going to turn out better than his, and it won't be because of white privilege. She will have learned a lesson and he'll always be a spoiled attention-seeker.

Lots of shittiness in one setting -

1. Loudon is super racist. Always has been, likely always will be. The freaking town of Leesburg celebrates white supremacy!

2. White people can never use the n word under any circumstances. Ever. Even while singing songs with it. Skip over it. This is something every 5 year old knows, mini karen at 15 certainly knew it.

3. The boy here is absolutely a POS for waiting until mini karen was successful and doing NOTHING other than actually talking about a broader societal problem before basically slut-shaming her. He is the worst of this story, and hopefully he understands he's going to be streisand syndromed because of this after he graduates nowheres college.

Mini will be fine, she'll marry brad and change her name and probably get to write made up crap in the new republic in 5 years under her new name.

+1 Spot on.

There are certainly racists who are up in arms about this but I’m deeply committed to anti-racism snd it’s not clear to me these four years later consequences are appropriate or proportional. I don’t think it would be appropriate for most criminal offenses by a 9th grader either.

Great explanation of why white people should not use the n word.

As pp stated above, don't engage aggrieved POC especially when they are recording.

It's kind of chilling to see him practicing with other white kids when exactly he'd pull the trigger and play a race card like that.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if he in turn gets shamed for treating girls like crap?

Do people do this to feel powerful? The initial rush must be great, but long term is this how you bring about systemic change? I don’t believe so.

That young man did a horrible thing. Will come back to bite him.

I love how’s there all this back and forth about who the bad guy of the story really is.... clueless white girl or spiteful boy? How about LCPS and the its staff who apparently consistently never addressed the racism in its school system?

good recap except I extend more grace to the boy. he is not at fault really for the internet pile-on, and he can’t be held to unreasonable standards of conduct for a kid either. I’m inclined to feel like adults let both of them down - the boy by having to live in racist Loudon and the girl by allowing the incident to be amplified and the university for being more scared of social media than they should be. this was a good chance for the university to embrace the values of learning, growth, and anti-racism, but instead they caved.
