NYT article on LCPS high school re: racism

It wasn't during school. The school should have done nothing other than have some general conversation on race which was probably already happening with all the protests this summer. Other than Trump and COVID, racism has been the top news story this year. How much publicity does the issue need?

He would post it, it would get taken down. And he would post over and over again.

Umm exactly how many videos of kids using the n word are floating around?

Doesn’t that prove his point that people were using the word casually and the school didn’t care?

And don’t give me this bullshit about using the n word “casually” because they heard it in rap music. I grew up in a lily white place. Rap music has had those lyrics for a long time, and we all knew white people don’t say the n word and kids were not saying it.

I will absolutely talk about casual use. That’s a description not an excuse. You didn’t see these things. I did. Dumb kids do dumb things but what he did was psychopathic. And you know it.

Calling it “casual” absolutely sounds like an excuse.

I’m not going to excuse the young man but when White people use the N word it doesn’t mean the same thing. It’s really disingenuous to pretend that teenagers couldn’t possibly understand this and it’s really disingenuous to pretend that it’s not harmful.

My parents are from another country with sectarian issues and there are similar ways that language is used to beat down the minority and the disingenuous excuses here are eerily similar.

The thing is, your opinion on these things aren’t valid. So maybe stop offering them. You are wrong.

Wow what a convincing argument. I will definitely stop commenting now.

Do some of you delicate snowflakes even read your own comments before you post?

DP. I read your posts and didn’t find them their persuasive. PP was asking you to think about how the specific context matters - a lot - and you just keep repeating that the situation is similar to something involving different phrases in another country. So it would help if you’d either be specific and willing to provide details or, if not, just move on.

There was absolutely nothing in that video to "beat down the minority". If anything it made the minority "cool". In your country, did the minority use the same word casually and for fun?

Yes, of course. You see excuses in that country like the following:

No one was hurt!
No one meant any harm!
It’s not a bad word!
It’s just a kid!
It’s a valid description!
That’s a mentally ill person who said/did that!
They (the minority) have so much power/money/cultural influence, now they want to police our language too!

You didn't even answer the question. The question was "Does the minority in your country use the word themselves casually and for fun?"

Yes, it’s a word with an actual meaning, but is an insult when directed at the minority. This is not terribly unique and I’m sure if you googled for one minute you could find many examples.

None of this is new. You guys think your excuses for these white kids are soooo persuasive. They are not. We all get it- white kids should say whatever they want.

Do you really think “the n word is in rap!” which sums up the entire argument here, is persuasive? Because a lot of people do not.

No, but I do think that's why she used it. And why a lot of white kids do. I agree that has to change, but I don't think the intent or malice was there for her or these kids that emmulate the dress, lexicon, diction, and mannerism of rappers they admire.

Of course, but let’s judge as if every suburban white 15-year-old kid inundated with this word from music and other references from popular culture wasn’t just trying to be slightly edgy, but instead was well versed in the writings of Ta Nahesi Coates by age 12 and intended a racial slur.

This is such BS - our culture creates these situations and then we toss all the fall-out back onto children, not where it belongs on the record producers and rap artists getting rich and living high in places like Tribeca and Malibu.

Man it’s not that hard. Just teach your kids not to say it. And why. Don’t blame Malibu lmao . Get off this thread and go parent.

Ever white person knows they should not say it. Even you. Only SOME want to claim they should still be able to say it anyway. That is also you. The rest of us don’t need to be able to use some racist slur because it’s a ... racist slur and we are good with not being racist or using racist terms.

My parents are from another country with sectarian issues and there are similar ways that language is used to beat down the minority and the disingenuous excuses here are eerily similar.

If that is your take-away from this lengthy thread you either have very poor English comprehension skills or are just blinded with hate for white people. In either case you are not adding much here.

Literally everyone in the country knows whites cannot use the word. It is forbidden. It really is that simple.

No, they don’t. Not to mention that your position would not withstand legal scrutiny and actually reinforces the notion that being white is some special category.

You haven’t a clue, only cheap platitudes.

Are you this worked about not being able to say f@&&ot or anyone Semitic slurs without disapproval?

Teach your kids not to use the F word, not to smoke, not to drink, and they still do things as an act of rebellion when you are not around. It's not that simple. If a 15 yr old gets caught on camera drinking a beer, should we have her kicked out of college three years later?
