Would you allow your 16 year old daughter to wear one of those almost thong swimsuits?

Anonymous
Yes I would. At 16, I think kids should be allowed to choose what to wear. I may offer my opinion, but not forbid it. I rather she deal of the possible fall out of this type of decision (maybe being uncomfortable with guys leering, or not having as much freedom to move around etc) while I am around her to guide her, than when she is 18 and only among peers her own age and clueless and naive as she.

Don't know how to post the actual pic so you'd have to click on the link. Yeah, this one is pretty out there, more so than a regular bikini bottom.

VS underwear at the beach.

Yep. It actually says it’s for ladies “looking for something super sexy to wear at the beach.” Totally inappropriate for teenagers, yet the “I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom” crowd will let it happen.

I don't know if most wear them, but they're increasingly common. And it depends where you are. In Hawaii, those are standard for young women, if not full-on thongs. At 16 especially, I don't think it's a big deal if the girl is happy and comfortable in them. If they aren't string sides, the cheeky bottoms are actually more conducive to water sports.

I think it's sad. I feel sorry for Olympic female athletes having to compete in ridiculous outfits while men are mostly covered. Do they go to the doctor to stop their periods so they can compete like that? It's just another assault on women's bodies. As long as women dress like that there won't be equality. Men will just see women as objects.

I have a dress that is a bit revealing on top that I wear to get, hopefully positive attention.

well, that is sad. You should just wear it because you like it.

Yeah, no woman EVER puts on a sexy dress for date night or to go out clubbing. Never, ever would we do such a thing....

to pretend that most girls are dressing for boys is pathetic. Yes, some girls do but some girls have painfully low self esteem and have been told snagging a guy is their ticket to a nice life. Most girls are not like that.

To assume most people go "clubbing" is equally as pathetic.

Dressing sexy for your husband is not the same as dressing for strangers to gawk at you.

Also, I think if you were more self confident you would understand these concepts.

How old were you, if I may ask, when you snapped up your lucky husband? 18?
If anything, you are pathetic yourself. Young women do wear sexy dresses, they do go clubbing and it's a special thrill to look and feel hot. Not that you'll know anything about it, though.

I'm sorry that you have never experienced a world where you actually wear clothes for yourself and attracted men with something other than your body.

Well call me a brute, but when I was young and single I used to dress sexy and go out to clubs and dance with the guys who looked "hot" to me. They looked at me and I looked at them. It's called physical attraction and it's an innate, natural and wonderful force of nature. Sorry you've never experienced it, you poor thing.

Oh I've had men attracted to me physically... Too much actually, since I was 13, the curse of being 5'10" . It's mostly boorish.... I met most my boyfriends in class when i was wearing sweats... New England

Lived in Colorado for a.while and dressed up is showering before.you hike.

I dress very nice for me. I'd actually like to wear a sign most days... I'm not wearing this for you.

Sucks to be invisible unless you are all dressed up shooting pheromones to any willing suitor ... Sorry you experonced.that.

I'm talking about smoldering eyes across the room, feeling your heart beating faster, dancing close and wanting to feel your bodies closer...that kind of physical attraction.

And, yeah, guys talked to me everywhere all the time. But there is something different about going out on the hunt for each other....which young, healthy, single and available people do.

This exchange was quite something.

I’ve hit menopause, and it is cruel how a small change in body chemistry wrecks the female figure. I am happy for girls who are in shape, and as long as they are not looking desperate or insecure or otherwise vulnerable tjen I say fine. Guys flaunt all the time, and we don’t shame them for it

Ha ha. I agree with you and appreciate your bluntness.

Right, that sounds like a problem with the dads, not the girls wearing the suits.

You say that until one of those girls ends up babysitting their kids and the Dad acts on some fantasy from X vids.

They’re teens. I want my teen to be confident and carefree. She is 17 and a large bosomed size 2 so she wears the tiny bikinis with the top worn upside down or whatever. She is totally fine. If people are staring she does not notice.

No I would not.

What guy flaunts his schlong in a swimsuit? And how exactly could he do that unless the swimsuit was see through?

You cannot parent other people's kids. And most definitely don't say anything critical about it, because when kids rebel, the first bad habit they take up is the thing they hear their mom criticizing all the time.

When my DD was 10 she had a classmate "Jane" who wore lipstick, blush, and eye makeup to school every day. I said not a peep about to my DD until she asked if she could do it to and I said she had to wait until high school. But some other parent who wasn't very careful with their words told their own DD "Larla" that makeup on little kids was "trashy" and then Larla repeated it at school and got in huge trouble. Several years later, Larla is in high school in her rebellious phase wearing a kilo of makeup every day. Tell me that's not because Larla's parents are overly critical of kids wearing makeup.

I would not allow this. If she wants to sexualize herself when she is an adult living on her own, that’s her decision. But while she is a child living at home with mom and dad, she must follow certain rules for appropriate dress, and as her parents, WE get to set those rules.
