Terms on the Council are staggered so they can't all be voted out at once.

Of great importance is the fact that no one but JLG has a credible, electable challenger who is willing to be tougher on crime. Unless more such people come forward, any talk of "voting" is meaningless.

The recall process for those elected in 2022 can begin Jan. 1, and organized campaigns are already making plans (especially WRT Allen and Nadeau).

Unlikely to be successful and then you are STILL left with the issue of credible electable candidates to replace.

Better to focus on such challengers for those up next cycle who are running, like JLG, and those, like Gray, who will not be running. There you have a tremendous chance of success. People don't want to do the hard work of identifying or stepping up as an electable candidate with more reasonable views on crime. Just want to tilt at windmills. No commitment to practical hard work. It's why nothing ever changes. Lisa Gore may change W4, now we need more of her.

Recall Alan and Nadeau?

Bwahahahah - so what? Really, SO FU**ING WHAT ??!?

You are only going to elect Allen 2.0 and Nadeau 2.0.

Be honest: you democrats will only elect more social-justice warrior democrats, who will vote for the same policies as Allen and Nadeau.

Name one single dem candidate who backs lowering the “youthful offender” age back down to 18.

Name one.

You can’t. Because democrats in 2023 (and 2024) refuse to take crime seriously.

Your party will not do a damn thing to lower crime anytime soon.

This is unacceptable. It needs to be withdrawn. Any DC resident can contact Mendelson's office.

Why bother calling? He does not care what you think and he is not going to change anything to lower crime.

He believes there is no crime crisis in DC, just like all our other progressive elected leaders in DC.

With public pressure the Council may be made to walk back this outrageous appointment.

It sends a timely message that the public is watching and will not tolerate these pro-criminal appointments (literally!) and shady processes.

Those who do not change to support the majority public opinion can face challengers and recall petitions (although electable challengers need to be identified first).

Your defeatist attitude is what allows not only the soaring crime of the past year but the cherry on the sundae of appointing a horrific murderer to a sentencing commission. Doing nothing is tacit approval. If you are not a DC Justice Lab astroturfer you should be ashamed or be screened for depression.

With sufficient public pressure it may yet be changed.

What contempt for crime victims (overwhelmingly black and poor) and for the families of those killed.

It is the most telling thing they have done yet, including the irregular procedure used to try to hide it and ram it through.

Push back. They all vote on it, so email all of them. Call.

You people need to go outside and live a little or move. These scaremongering threads everyday is tiresome.

Crime happens everywhere, particularly in inner cities. The city needs to invest in a higher minimum wage, educational opportunities and the supporting of whole families.
Putting more people in jail in the 22nd century is barbaric.

Yes! We need more socialism. That solves everything.

Minimum wage requires you to work.

We don't need a marxist state to reduce crime - problem/reaction/solution much? Reducing poverty is a worthy goal but it has been a constant in human history, unlike unchecked lawlessness. The poor and people of color are overwhelmingly the victims of crime, they deserve to live in safety. My immigrant ancestors were poor and none were criminals or violent, in fact some became law enforcement, fire fighters and served their communities in other ways. They had food scarcity at times but did not use that as a pretext to carjack for joyrides, beat elderly or snatch dogs from owners.

What works is simple and it works quickly. It's even working just up 95 in Baltimore and saving a LOT of LIVES.

Socialism works great, until you run out of other peoples money.

^It is beyond offensive to claim that the poor or people of color are criminal and violence prone and that the rest of us must simply be victimized until there is marxism. That is overwhelmingly NOT true. They are more likely to be victims. In a decent society we would remove violent criminals from the community so the rest of us can live in safety.

What has lead to low crime in marxist states is not equity but authoritarian rule.

relentless follow up

has been completely and utterly abandoned in DC. From federally appointed USAO to elected AG to federally appointed judges to putting vicious murderers on the "Sentencing Commission" it really is a criminal's paradise. Racine, Schwab and unchecked truancy have done MUCH to train up the next generation with criminality one of the only professions they pursue. Fed and local agencies that oversee those on probation or pre-trial do not impose consequences for failure to appear or non-compliance with terms of release, in DC alone there are over 1,000 outstanding unserved bench warrants (Fed marshals, where are you?) and more in nearby VA and MD. Names and addresses on the warrants, known criminals, known to be non-compliant with terms or appearing in court, yet, nothing is done, no follow up at all.

When I see kids running from a crime, laughing, I think it's a bit in disbelief that they get away with such things. The ones who mask up must believe, even a tiny bit, that they may not. But, experience is a good teacher. No consequences for behavior, you get more of it. It's basic human knowledge.

The poor in this country pay more in taxes than the wealthiest. I believe we learned that during the investigation into Trump's taxes. Taking care of people when they put into the system is not socialism, it's called advancement & effectiveness.
