Because of Rick Sofield. He built the girls program from scratch. No one has ever been interested in the boys program.

Why not? Ireton has the area talent. With PVI moving further west, there may be a gap that BI can fill.

O'Connell will be the beneficary of PVI's move to Loudoun, not BI. To get things going, BI needs a minimum of: a good/great coach AND a number of kids that form the nucleus of a strong team to get the school some publicity. Then hopefully better kids come and it becomes self-sustaining.

They've been trying for years with no success.

Eh, there are already lots of strong boys program and more than enough places for a boy who wants to play on a top team to go. BI is one of small (realy just 2 consistently) group of truly outstanding girls programs in the DC area. They are smart to keep the focus and resources on the girls (it has served them phenomenally well thus far) and let the other schools have the boys.

I find it Interesting that two of the best teams in the area last year, Bullis and Landon, don't participate in a Fall Ball league.

There were some other girls in that area who were also excellent, and they wanted to play together. That got the ball rolling and now they have a program with a nearby talent pool that is strong and the school is 2x cheaper than SSSAS.

SSSAS is always going to be excellent, but they are relying more than ever on girls outside of Alexandria.

Charlotte Sofield is awesome and yes, many girls moved to BI to play with her and to now attempt to follow in her footsteps. However, Rick has kept that pipeline flowing, and he has even more girls than ever this year (look at Varsity roster). Rick is a huge draw in his own right. He is a great coach and am amazing person.

While its true that BI is less than half the cost of SSSAS, the problem is that it also offers a much lower level education. You just dont get the rigorous, challenging academics at BI that you get at other area privates and Catholics. Even SSSA doesnt stack up academically against the other area privates in some folks opinions. Fo the girls who want to play at State schools this is fine but for those looking to the Ivy league and similar, BI isnt gong to prepare them for the acadmeics if they get there ( and yes, I know KD is at Yale but that is an anomoly). As for SSSAS relying more on girls outside Alexandria, great. There is nothing wrong with that, private schools are meant to attract students from a wide geographical area and that can only benefit SSSAS in multilple ways, not just for lacrosse.

You miss the point. Yes, he is a good coach and has kept the momentum going, which is what I saw. But the credit goes to her daughter. If she didn't go to BI along with a core of talented girls who wanted to play with her, BI's girls program would be nowhere near where it is now - Rick or no Rick.

I wonder if Landon is de-emphasizing lacrosse by not playing in the Fall Ball league....

Landon kids play for Next Level and DC Express teams for fall ball.

Landon does not field a team in the FALL BALL league.

A few of their kids might play on the NL 2020 team, however its far from even representing Landon as its coached by the Heights head coach and 80% of the roster is comprised of non Landon kids.

Coach Bordley has never believed in Fall Ball and actually encourages his players to participate in other sports in the off-season.

More and more college coaches are telling high school players to not play lax year round and prefer multi sport athletes. The variety of physical activity minimizes the risk of overuse injuries, there's less mental burnout and other sports help you develop athletic instincts useful for lax. Hopefully some of the parentshere can impart that to their kids as well.

The best lacrosse players in the area this year - Joey Epstein from Landon and Ricky Miezan from Episcopal have one thing in common, they play multiple sports.

I laugh at some of these parents who think playing year round lacrosse will make their son a better lacrosse player. Some of these parents drop thousands on clinics and private lessons.

You are right. A hyper focus on one sport is never a good idea. May be good for the club selling you the add-ons like private lessons, shooting clinics, training and extras but not good for the player.
