Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| Fairfax county has a similar program in its schools as well. As long as students register before their 18th birthday, they can be placed in high school and stay until 22. How ages are verified, I don't know. Now, does anyone over 18 need to be taught in a regular high school or can/should their right to an education be met in an alternative environment? |
| By this time in the 2 weeks this story will be national. Too much red meat for the right in the shadow of the nations capital. MoCo has deteriorated into a shell of its former self. |

I posted this above. This is only for ESOL students. We have gotten so many older students this year with little to know education in their countries - it is next to impossible that they can graduate in 4 years. It's an issue we ESOL teachers have talked about for years. |
MoCo will be fine. Rockville is still considered one of the best cities to live in. Other "great" places have had their share of heart break -- think Newton CT. |
. MCPS website states that anyone under 19th birthday can register as a student. If the student starts 9th grade when s/he is one day before their 19th birthday, they will graduate from HS at almost 23! Why dont MCPS put them in an alternative program, teach them basic langsuge skill, trach them the law in the US, and may make them into productive adults? |
Most of them do become productive adults. That is why we educate them. My friend's step daughter came to live with them. Her mother died in a car accident. She was 16 and only spoke Spanish. She graduated and is in college. |
At the taxpayer's expense? These people don't belong here if they have not come through the proper and legal way. I agree that of course they don't belong in schools. However, coming up with ways to accommodate ILLEGAL immigrants is not the answer. They should be forced to prove legal status and ICE called in if they cannot prove they are here legally. This crime is shining a spotlight on what will continue to happen if we continue to accommodate illegals with no penalties for being here. When will our government decide to protect it's own citizens first? Shame on all jurisdictions who continue to aid and abed people here ILLEGALLY! |
You should google, "cut off your nose despite your face". |
As the FCPS ESOL teacher, I have to say that most will not graduate. I have taught for 16 years and have seen maybe 10 total students who came at age 17-18 and who worked their way from ESOL 1 to graduation. The odds are just stacked against them if they are coming at that age from a place where education was not great and maybe they've been out of school for several years. Most of these students can barely read so to expect them to pass English 11, US History, Algebra II, etc is just not going to happen. This doesn't mean they won't be productive citizens someday, but we need other options. Vocational training, etc so they can get jobs. |
This 100%. Who are we kidding. Why do we think that someone with limited education and speaks very liitle or no English at age 17 will ever catch up to the curriculum. Why is this even allowed to happen is a mystery to me. We are not helping anyone here. |
Have you compared the "productivity" of students who don't go to school those years vs. those that do? You would be enlightening to see the difference. You may not be able to see or feel the difference, why? Because the only stories you hear are the bad ones. Does anybody come back and say, hey, I became a chef, thanks. Or...I was able to start a cleaning company, or a construction company or a landscaping company. Hey, I work in London for Got soccer . All of these are true stories I know. You should follow a few students. No, you don't hear the success stories because that does not help the politicians with their agenda. |
Untrue. We are actually helping everybody. These students are way more successful than you are willing to believe. The alternative is not a good story that actually does hurt everyone. |
What are you talking about? Of course I have had students come back and tell me how they are doing. In fact, I saw one this week because she now works at my doctor's office. My point is that arriving here at age 17 with a 5th grade education is going to make it very difficult for a student to graduate by folllwing the traditional path of education with the academic credits they need to earn. That doesn't mean they can't go out and get a good job someday. It would be helpful, however, if we offered some sort of alternative path for those students so that they could get some good skills to go and get good jobs where you don't need to go to college - electrician, plumber, auto body, etc. these are actually jobs my students would like and yet there is no opportunity for them to pursue them without paying a lot of money for the classes. |
So do you believe that the 17 and 18 year old boys who raped this poor girl were appropriately placed in a public high school as 9th graders? |
