none of the entities bolded are responsible for the safety of children.

So because central office staff (ADULTS) are allegedly "responsible for the safety of children", that's why they couldn't work yesterday or today?

Are sidewalks and parking at Central Office cleared? Most parents would want snow cleared from school grounds first, so schools can open ASAP. I hope Central Office isn’t prioritized.

So, they need staff to inspect the schools before opening the schools, but the staff that would do the inspecting can't work until they clear the sidewalks and parking at Central Office, which can't be done until they clear school parking lots? I feel like this is a bad plan.

don’t be obtuse.

Did you not see I was comparing those organizations to MCPS offices?

Yes which was dumb

Why? Why can't MCPS offices be open to manage the response and get kids back in school ASAP?

It was the right call. It wasn’t safe this morning based on all the sirens I heard wailing. It wasn’t convenient for us either but better than skidding across the black ice.

If you did it based on sirens, it sounds like you didn't actually try the roads. MoCo cleared them. Driving shouldn't have been a problem.

And for my situation right now, it's a little different when the school you're paying $2000/mo for is closed, not the public school.

Why is this true? Why can't they create zones and open some, even if others can't?

Ah, you must be new here. It’s too early for me to play drinking games. But this one was on my bingo card. Surprised it took until Wednesday for people to start asking again.

30 years... the stupidity still amazes. Even a north/south zone (in separate zones) would help for all of the magnet whiners. If MOST kids can go to school, they should do it.

Probably closed again Thursday.

based on the three schools in our neighborhood that are all near our house--parking lots are pretty clear, however the bus lanes at the MS are still packed down snow. Sidewalks at all 3 are clear. It looks like bases on this mini-survey, MCPS is trying to get schools open tomorrow. The problem though is that MCPS waited too long to plow and with freezing temps, the snow was already iced and packed down beneath the top layer, so progress had been slow. It's like us waiting to shovel our driveway instead of making several pass throughs throughout the past two days.

Maybe Friday closed too.

Our elementary school parking lot hadn’t been plowed at all when I drove by on my way to work this morning around 7:45am. I don’t know why they couldn’t get to parking lots more quickly, but I assume that’s why they couldn’t open buildings/childcare. My money’s on no school but offices open tomorrow.

Also will add that all of the nearby private schools (one of which is in my neighborhood directly next to the MS) have perfectly cleared lots, bus lanes, and sidewalks. Interesting that they're able to clear theirs and we can't.

Sirens can be heard as one is driving,
no? If tree falls in a forest ..

Yet the challenges is you're talking about your one driveway vs 200+ schools across 50 miles, and several school bus depots.

So how does that work, in reality. If the south zone is clear but the north isn't, the south zone's school year ends sooner than the north school zone? And if your school in

I’m not arguing for schools to be closed, I’m wondering why they are not open today.

The county didn’t finish plowing roads until yesterday evening, and according to the snow page, there was a lot of drift in Poolesville and Damascus.

Which means the roads were plowed today. And every school I went by yesterday had parking lots and sidewalks already cleared.

They could have opened today. They could have opened *on time* today, but at least could have opened with a delay if they wanted a chance to clean things up. And certainly there is no excuse for closing child care programs.

Unless you checked all 200 schools, your observation is limited.

Show a picture of your unplowed school then.

Your delusions of self-importance are noted and mocked.

Completely agree. What planet do you live on? Sounds like Utopia. But here on Earth, there are reasons we don't force parents into driving on unplowed roads, we don't force children into standing at bus stops with wind chills in the teens (or lower) on streets that are not plowed, and we can't make busses drive down neighborhood streets where there are no driveways and cars are parked along both sides of the street and piles of snow makes it impossible for a bus to get through even if we wanted it to. Someday maybe we can all live wherever you do, but you'll probably complain about some "element" we bring in with us (like, common sense).

Buses don't run on tracks. Routes can be adjusted.

That's a very uninformed response. Congratulations. Do you have any idea how a school bus system works? It's not a one bus, one driver, one route, one school thing. They all drive multiple routes on a rolling time schedule. They start with the high schools, then middle, then ES. Someone would have to know what each street condition is, and how to change the route (if possible), and then which bus stops have to be changed, and then communicate this to families in time for that to take effect. Unless you suggest that they just bypass some of the kids who are standing out in the cold. But thanks for your observation that buses don't run on tracks!

I know, right? What a freakimg genius.
