The DC Clown Council has set back the cause of DC statehood by a decade, maybe more. In fact, it's unlikely that DC will ever be a state. If DC citizens want to vote for senators and a real congressman, then they had better be nice to Gov. Wes Moore and the Maryland legislature, because retrocession is about the only possibility left. DC politicians don't like retrocession because statehood would be an ego and power trip for them. But for the rest of us, it would be a benefit if DC were to join a reasonably well-run state with a vote. |

Ha, so me using the word "performative" is a dead giveaway that I love the DC council but me outright saying "I don't love the DC council" is meaningless and something you ignore? The vote by the Senate is performative because they have the constitutional right to overrule DC laws- but if DC withdraws the laws from consideration then there is no reason for the Senate to vote on it, other than to have a vote on the record about how members feel about the legislation. Therefore it is performative- it serves no actual oversight purpose. (I do agree that Mendo might not have the unilateral right to withdraw legislation but Shumer declaring already that they will vote on it without giving the full council the right to withdraw it is, again, performative. He is putting on a performance for his constituents who believe the Fox News talking points about the bill). (and for the record I don't love most of the crime bill but the talking points are completely disingenuous) |

Meanwhile SCHOOLS are facing a 5% cut. If people want to invest in kids, that would be a good place to start. Not this vanity bus proposal that does not have funding available. Many people don't pay for the bus as it is so it is not a crisis for the poor. The Council authorized a test of making the Circulator buses ($1 fare) free for a time and fairly quickly rescinded it. It was expensive and did not really boost ridership, the purported goal. They DRAFTED the bill with that identified funding stream that has now diminished. All they know to do is to flout their ignorance, name call and posture about irrelevancies. Shame we cannot call for new elections, these clowns are not fit for purpose. |
