Military observations on Ukraine invasion

Putin made extended comments today. NYT reported on them about 3 hours ago.

He is simply living on a different planet than the rest of us.

Everything we hear in the news here, he claims the opposite.

Yeah. It's strange to be seeing so many comments like this now. Seeing people just realizing that yeah, a lot who go to combat, who die in it, are practically just kids.

I didn’t just realize that soldiers are usually young and come from poor backgrounds. But in most armies, including ours, they are mercenaries, paid and trained to fight. And we spend obscene amounts of money to minimize lives lost. These teens were conscripted weeks before the war and sent in without training, proper uniforms or food. Yeah it’s depressing to see in 2022.

Oh the Ukraine’s most likely have 14 and 15 years old fighting. The city fighting that is coming will be very bad. You could see 100k KIA and multiples of that as wounded on both sides. During WW2 the Soviets formed battalions and spent them to the front with 8 hours of training. Even the current US forces are really young many just out of high school.

Similar things are happening in Africa right now, but on a smaller scale.

And we’re not used to this happening in “Europe”.

I use quotes because Russia is not Europe. It is its own beast.

Someone upthread said that the Russian soldiers were wearing mismatched uniforms, probably due to lack of budget/organization in their military. Can anyone confirm that?

I don't know if war crimes belongs here or its own thread. Russia is committing war crimes against Ukrainians, many of whom are Russians themselves, or related to Russians.

Russians military power has always been over rated and built up by the defense industry. I know military experts who did war games after the collapse of the Soviet Union. They went to each country inspected the military and were just shocked. The common theme was the West wasted so much money because the Russians military was a paper tiger.

How sick (deliberately breaking the ceasefire, targeting civilians, and lining the evacuation route with explosives). So basically, at this point the Russian soldiers are either cowards, or drooling idiots.

Either way, I don't buy that they are victims of this war anymore. I would literally rather organize a mutiny against my officers than decimate Ukrainian homes and families, and terrorize an innocent people.

I'm SO DONE with the "I'm so sorry for those sad conscripted underfed Russian teenage soldiers" bullshit. No. You don't get to avoid accountability for participating in this, for following evil orders.

I’m kind of hoping Russia has an errant missile hit a nato country. They will blame it on Ukraine of course but is Poland takes some casualties I think the world will put on their big boy pants and put midget Adolf in his place.

Seems like a waste for nato to have these cool weapons and not use them on deserving targets.

They are not fighting dirty they are fighting the only way they are capable of fighting. It’s a WW2. Just line troops up and have them attack. If the Ukraine can hold the cities and can get resupplied the the casualties could be in the 100k. Russia will most likely over run the country and at that point it will become a pacification operation. The Russians will kill civilians and de- people towns and cities. It is going to get much much worst. This will go on for 10 years or until, Putin is removed.
