Perhaps the windows should be locked or changed to only open a crack or to post a sign to use caution.

Well we found the idiot who supports the family.

The only thing different here is that it occurred on a cruise ship. No more or less tragic, but the circumstances are not all that unusual.

Most of those the child likely accesses the danger themselves alone. In this case the child needed adult assistance to access the danger.

And adult stupidity. So sad.

So, no balconies? No open decks?

Go for it. Attack someone who has an opinion different from you.

You don't need them really. You don't need glass either. It just lets the cancer in. Solid steel plates would be safer. Kind of like a submarine that doesn't submerge. Probably not traveling at all would be safest.

What are you talking about? Haven’t you ever been in a high rise building? At that height there is absolutely a breeze.

Why doesn’t this happen more often (kids falling off balconies, etc)? Because most people have a modicum of common sense and don’t lift children up where they don’t belong. Seriously...I have sympathy for what the family is going through but the inability to accept that it is the grandpa’s fault and his alone is disgusting.

If this happened often then yes, maybe the cruise line should take preventative measures, but bottom line is it doesn’t without gross negligence/user error.

Grandpa thought there was a window there. He was mistaken. Poor guy. He didn’t do anything wrong but really neither did the cruise ship.

I guess I just don't understand how he didn't know the window was open once he raised her up there. Ive never been by an open window that I couldn't tell was open. And for her to fall out, he was extremely close. The second he realized it was open he should have brought her to a closed window.

I would be more understanding if it all happened in a split second like as he was lifting her he lost his grip and she fell. But that's not what it seems like happened.

I guess we don't really know how quickly it happened. He may have picked her up and out she went.

When I see a balcony or open deck, I'm able to see the open space and feel the air. I'm aware that windows aren't present. If I'm several stories up in a hotel or any other place that has windows, I assume that the windows are closed.

You've never been in a high rise apartment or condo?

Grandpa's story makes no sense. There was glass on the floor level - the poor girl could see out of it from the floor. There was zero reason to lift her up. My guess is grandpa wanted her to feel the air, was stupid, and lost his grip. Both visually and physically, there is no way he didn't know the window was open. Unless he was drunk or impaired, which is still human error.

No he didn’t. That was the attorney’s statement after he was hired. Grandpa initially said he lifted her up to the open window. Once the attorney was hired all the sudden it was I didn’t know there was an open window...

According to the historical weather reports, it was somewhat breezy. At least 6mph all day.

Not that this matters. Most people over the age of 12 have mastered the concept of a window.
