Boundary Review Meetings

I can’t follow the woman who is calling out the “unethical practice” some developers allegedly made when they made the Herndon homes only if they were in the Langley pyramid. Thankfully someone rightfully stated that no one in the Great Falls community wants any boundary changes. Everyone bought their homes knowing the pyramid. Reid said in the future they may not provide transportation that far west, but I bet parents would get together to find a solution. Leave the Langley Pyramid boundaries alone.

As everyone always says, your pyramid is not guaranteed when you buy a house. And why are people talking about something that isn’t even happening? Shut up.

Who says “your pyramid is not guaranteed?” Realtors can’t even talk about schools pyramids. Further, there wasn’t a comprehensive boundary review for 40 years, and everyone did fine. We just need to focus on schools that are overcrowded and make more room for them there.

People are concerned because they are moving kids to Langley from McLean, increasing utilization. If it continues, in 5 years they will be looking to siphon off homes in Forestville to Herndon.

FCPS cannot not provide bus service to far off neighborhoods.

Wtf?

That PP is misconstruing what was said. They said that there were four priorities for the boundary study, including transportation but they obviously didn’t consider that when keeping kids at Langley.

was the person who commented on the developer deals and distance a parent or fcps staff?

Poster here: Reid specifically said due to budgetary constraints they may have to assess whether it is financially viable to continue to bus kids from the western boundary to Langley.

You bought a house that is a five minute drive from Herndon HS. What did you think would happen. You guys are stupid.

That things would stay the same as they always have been, as there is no good reason for it to change, and the parents don’t want it.

It's not about parents - communities change, the number of kids change, ethnicities within schools change. You're the same people who are complaining that the Spring Hill kids who they are rezoning to Langley are going to make it too crowded. They're going to a better high school, and you should be happy that people get to go to the "better" high school instead of complaining about them.

No I don’t care about the kids that are no being zoned for Langley. I care about my family and the families within my community who moved here to go Langley, the better high school.

Why are the Langley parents screaming and whining tonight when there is no proposal on the table to move anyone out of Langley?

They have to provide bus service.

Surely they could find other busses to cut, such as middle school AAP busses.

Why can't fcps drop their ridiculous lawsuit and stand by the girls of FCPS?

Because they know it’s obvious they should be moved.

Anonymous wrote:As someone with a child in Lewis, I will say that there is community there. It is challenging, when you meet parents for whom English is not their first language, but they genuinely want their children to succeed. And just from that alone, we can bond. We're all there for our kids.

I've attended potlucks at Lewis with international flavors I've never had before and it was AMAZING!

Speaking of international, the international night at Lewis is always a sold-out event. There are other community events, like the holiday concert the band does for local preschools, and last year there was a trunk-or-treat event.

The teachers have been amazing and really work hard to help their kids succeed. They don't go easy, but they also really care. Throughout elementary and middle school, teachers only reached out to me when things went wrong for me kid, but the Lewis teachers reach out to let me know when my kid does awesome. (And seriously, the first time I got one of those messages, my heart pounded and I thought, "Oh crap, the teacher's emailed me!" But it was good news! Never before did a teacher email me with good news!)

I'm not willing to give up on Lewis. We have been so happy and welcomed there. It may be hard to see from the outside, but Lewis is a really good school and deserves so much more than what the school board is doing to it.

Yes, I'm talking to other parents, and yes, we plan to speak up on behalf of the school. We will do our best.

Do you plan on pushing the boundary issue or programming issue within the Lewis pyramid (AP, AAP Center in Middle School, keeping the kids in the pyramid)?

Her comment was both historical and forward-looking.

She was saying that historically some real estate developers cut deals with the county in the early 1990s to have some areas in Herndon rezoned to Langley and said they wouldn't build expensive homes unless the areas were redistricted. She questioned the legality of those deals but suggested they were immoral and unethical, even if legal.

She was suggesting that, going forward, Langley should stop getting special treatment.

I wonder if the Westbriar island sticking out like a sore thumb in the middle school/high school maps is making them nervous. It’s so close to Colvin Run and looks almost the exact shape of the Forestville cutout into Herndon.

Grumble grumble.

I wouldn’t be surprised if western Great Falls/Forestville ES ends up at Herndon in 10-15 years. If there is growth in Tysons and kids need to be moved from McLean and Marshall to Langley, I could see a scenario where that pushes Langley over capacity and the furthest west school is then pushed out as a result. But we’re not there yet and probably won’t be there in 5 years either. It’s a ways off, but still within the realm of possibility.

It was one parent and one community member. Don’t lump the rest of us in with them.

Are you estimating Forestville ES, and Great Falls ES (on the western side) would be moved?
