See the thread about the MV unionization effort. It raises many good points that those worried should consider.

I agree with future probability. Most of the families who got into 8th was because there was 3 new grades and all those new open seats. That’s never gonna happen again, and it was a lucky year for those that got in. Even with a new campus, the waitlist for preK 3 is 387, preK 4 184, K 115. That’s impressive for a new campus. And if the new principal does a decent job setting up the new campus the first year, continues to improve it yearly, I predict that 8th will overtake P St in desirability. It’s in a better neighborhood, the NE corridor of Brookland, H St, Woodbridge, etc..has a ton of middle class families who want decent schools and language immersion. |
Our preK 4 child is currently happy at his school and we are leaving for MV. Change is easy at this age, and it doesn’t take a lot to make toddlers happy in school where it’s all play base. Our child will realize later that it was the right move when he goes to DCI, and we don’t have to uproot him from his friends, sport clubs, activities, etc..to move for viable middle or high schools. |
Your child won’t realize it was the right decision as he won’t remember his school from Pk3. -middle school parent |
You are right
He won’t remember when he is 11, growing up with his friends from MV since he was 5, and will continue to be with them till high school graduation. |
DCI is no longer guaranteed |
Until 5th grade when only 60% of his class gets into DCI.... so either him or his best friend are being uprooted. |
I think you guys are putting too much extras on this. There will naturally be a lot of kids that leave before DCI. I bet in 6 years, it will be more like a 90% shot of getting into DCI. |
They would need to see 37 kids leave or go to a different middle in order for you to get to your 90% ... DC is in the middle of a surge of families looking to come and stay in the city... it might be higher then 60 but it definitely won't be 90% . If DCI was a guarantee this thread wouldn't exist all all families would be jumping at the chance to go to the MV8. |
We realize that but high probability of getting in and odds are in your favor. Not all families that year will send their kids to DCI. Some will move out of the area, some will move to the Deal/Wilson boundary, and some will go private. There will be openings from all these movements. Chances that our IB middle will be good enough to send our DS in 5-6 years = 0. Chance of getting into now already overcrowded Deal OOB in middle = 0 Chance that we will want to uproot our good life and move out of the city = 0 Chance of getting into DCI = 60-80% Chance of getting into DCI if they expand in the future = > 60-80% So with those options, odds are pretty good at DCI compared to the rest above. We want Spanish immersion so glad we got into MV and still would take it without the middle and high school track. We realize it’s not guanranteed but it’s just the icing on the cake to have such high probability of having a track to not only middle but also high school. |
| Ok no. If the aggregate rate is 60%, that means it is 100% for siblings who want to attend, and then all the nonsiblings lottery for the remaining spots. So way less than 60% to make it average out to 60% overall. |
I"m actually looking at it from the opposite lens. The option of DCI in the future is so tempting, but I'm more concerned about my 4 year old and his EC experience now vs focusing on what Middle/High school will look like. Our current school doesn't have a middle/high track but we had a really great pk3 year and the commute is easy. Is a longer commute and a rocky next couple of years worth a 60-80% shot at DCI in 7 years? Thats likely why so many people are torn... |
Well from the waitlist numbers for a new campus, I would say many of jumping at getting into MV whether it’s for Spanish immersion or middle/high school track, or both. This question was addressed during the tour with the new principal and she said they estimated it at 80%. Whatever the range, we will take 60-80%. Those are very good odds. |
Take out the middle school factor then. If you want Spanish immersion, take the spot. If you don’t, then don’t take the spot. Easy enough decision. |
Agree, if you want Spanish immersion and are not currently getting it, then go for it. It’s your only chance really. I’m sure the majority of families did not rank MV just for middle school 5-7 years from now. They ranked it for Spanish immersion. |
