An interesting article about MCPS student population

People don't move to W schools from east-county. They move from DC or out-of-the area. OK, maybe 5% from Silver Spring area that I know of.

MCPS has had its best days. If they understood, the W school districts would succeed from the rest to avoid over taxation to support the Eastern part of the county.

The few east county students that matriculate in the W clusters help support the bell curve. Another positive is they are not in the honors or advanced classes - so the better students do not have to deal with their distractions.

MCPS teachers are stressed as are the leadership. We now live two different Moco. One is over achieving and the other is falling behind at rapid pace. All the changes MCPS is doing is trying to close the achievement gap through statistics - but not going to happen. Wish the residents of MOCO were not so naive.

And I am sure the Silver Spring population you know represents a valid sample for the whole area!

People keep saying this, but I'm not sure what comparison school districts we are falling below.

You're falling behind much of the world according to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
At least the illegals coming to Montgomery County from Central and South America are getting better schools than the ones they left behind.

I am not the PP and since the whole point of the article is to say that the Hispanic populations has quadrupled in less than 10-15 years, there is a major cause of concern, unless you honeslty think all of these Hispanics applied for citizenship and came here legally. Funding for ESOL and FARMS has skyrocketed and has taken a lot of money away from actual education for legal citizens. Meanwhile testing scores have gone down. I don't want illegals here at all. None. They are federal law breakers cheating a system and bringing poverty to the country that the middle class is struggling to pay for. I want the ones coming to America legally here. There is a big difference. No one should get a free pass into another country. We are the only ones that seem to allow it. It is all a political ploy.

You guys keep voting for democrats because they want the illegals to keep voting for them. If you think there aren't any illegals votiing you are really naive.

I live in east MoCo in a not so great school district and bought here because we don't have children. We didn't want to pay the extra 100k+ it would have cost us to get a similar house in a better school area. There are non-hispanic families near us, but I only see brown children getting on the public school buses. From what I have heard, most of the other (white, asian, south-east asian) kids who live around here go to private schools. Wish the next president (hopefully not Trump!) will crack down on businesses employing illegals and/or create a system so they will pay into services like the rest of us. Would certainly help Montogomery County.

Is it true that schools on the east side are going down (and by contrast W schools are staying the same or getting better), as many people are asserting? The east side schools by us all had Great School scores go up. I know people on this board seem to place lots of importance on those scores. I actually see more gentrification in Silver Spring, for example.

Whitman dropped on great schools while a few school in SS went up. No biggie and certainly not implying the school is falling apart but to answer your question, no it's more nuanced than that.

There are parts of SS that are declining. other areas are continuing to improve and housing prices reflect that.

What are the declining areas?
