We are in D1 and I hate it. It’s the culture of the whole division, even the teams who don’t want to succumb to it end up being the same way. Yuck. |
Same with any of the successful teams. You see repeat names getting 1/2/3 in races, and even in their “down” year, they still may place 3rd. We were on a D5 team years ago with 5 or 6 kids from the same swim family, different genders and age groups, and all 5 or 6 placed first every time. That’s 60 points for the team! Once that family was gone (military), the team fell drastically. |
Same with Tuckahoe (except one family) and Overlee. All families who have been there since the kids were young and many who have multiple 1st-place swimmers. |
Yeah, it’s the same kids swimming in the A meets as last year except they don’t have their top male swimmer since he graduated. Same with CB. The only things that change are the 8Us and the aging up. |
OKM didn’t refuse recognition of seniors they just requested the senior recognition portion take place after the last relay. Starting the meet with 30min of stories and honors isn’t fair for the visiting team and honestly isn’t fair for the actual senior swimmers before they have to race. Most importantly the demonic themes (punisher face paint and banners everywhere), scary rabid bunny costume and full body gorilla costume in the skit with violent undertones 100% needs to stop, step up NVSL. CB-Do this at your Friday pep-rally if you like this weird stuff. Why make the visiting team go through this if you truly are all about the competition & sportsmanship. It actually discounts your swimming talent and CB parents should step up to change this culture for the better. Side note, credit to CB (reps/parents) for honoring OKM seniors and giving flowers to them at the DJ table. Very unexpected and a nice display of sportsmanship after the 15-18 boys splash incident and before the stupid skit antics. The OKM Osprey’s almost got you and (on behalf of many on the chat) boy it would have been sweet! See you at RC! |
Yikes. This is pretty crappy. Seniors deserve to be recognized at the beginning, before everyone is wiped out and hot. |
NVSL actually recommmends doing it at the end of the meet if there are a large number of senior graduates. This has been echoed by numerous division coordinator over the years. I seriously doubt OKM ‘requested’ CB move the ceremony to the end. Chesterbrook has done the ceremony at the end of the meet previous years as well. |
This is weird. The recognition is always at the beginning of the last home meet. |
Eh, I don’t know about this. The visiting team shouldn’t have to sit around and wait an extra 30 minutes for the meet to start so that the home team can honor their seniors. Our MCSL team does the senior honors after the end of a home meet and no one melts or dies having to be there that extra 30 minutes. |
The CB trolls are out in force on DCUM it appears. 30 years of being a**holes doesn’t make many friends. The sad thing is it comes right from the parents. The swim team parents control the pool board, hence why there are never any repurcussions or consequences for a consistent pattern of poor behavior |
As a former swimmer for highlands I’m not sure that honoring the seniors at the beginning of the meet is the best idea. The last thing that I and the rest of our team want to do is sit for 30 minutes after warm ups to honor another team’s seniors. We appreciate them doing the ceremony at the end and although we are right down the road from Chesterbrook, I would have to have to delay the rest of my day by being forced to sit through senior recognition. As for the “demonic themes” while this may not be your idea of sportsmanlike, nothing here is against the NVSL rules. We’ve had to experience much worse like our mascot being destroyed in front of all of our swimmers as well as many other worse things so consider yourself lucky that the worst you got was a slot machine skit and being splashed at a swim meet. This behavior may not be your idea of a good culture since all of the lower divisions are not as prone to taking meets seriously but there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with what they were doing this past weekend from what you described. As a side note, I’ve seen other teams such as Tuckahoe decorate their pool with babies hanging from nooses with blood all over as well as wearing the exact same face paint that the team was apparently wearing when facing off against you guys. |
WAIT. Chesterbrook wanted to do their recognition ceremony at the start of the meet and OKM refused to let them do it then? That is actually rude considering it was not their home meet. As good guests you should do whatever the host team wants in terms of recognizing their seniors. |
There are pools that act out plays with costumes at the A meets? WTAF!?!?! |
NVSL: We’ve experienced the senior recognition during the break before relay warmup. We’ve had it at this point in the meet as visiting team and home team in multiple divisions. Our pool does recognize the visiting team’s seniors as well.
At the end of the relays is a ridiculous request from OKM. They clearly didn’t want to stay for the senior recognition. And was the 30 min skit time before the meet start time? Did the meet start late because of the skits? Meets normally start at 9am, did the meet start later than 9am? A lot of the skits occur while the officials are getting setup, etc. |
I’ve never seen a skit or “walk-in” and I’ve been involved with our NVSL team in Divisions 18-12 for 17 years. (The league used to have 18 divisions). |
