where is KSAC/RMSC going?

So it's "Glenmont or bust"...?

If they get it heated, it might actually be the best option from an all factors considered perspective.

Glenmont is an older pool and the mechanical often does not work properly. Spring and fall are fine, winter no.

They only cancel if the air temps are below 30 or if the pool heaters can't get the water temps up to a certain level

What does this have to do with anything? No RMSC group swims outside in the winter. Those parents agreed to it, we did not.

You seem like an angry elf. The county hasn’t planned well or communicated well about these changes. That said swimming outside is a real potential solution for RMSC, as it is for other local clubs. It’s not ideal, I don’t think anyone given the choice of an indoor option near the KSAC would choose swimming outdoors, but as the county has stated, swimming outdoors is likely at least some of the time. You are welcome to find another club or site.

The original promise was the silver spring pool. It’s not that easy to switch sites and the silver spring would work best for us. We cannot afford a different club.

Except they(RMSC) never "promised" Silver Spring or anything else for that matter. Silver Spring as a wholesale/only solution was never "promised" by anyone in any official RMSC capacity... In fact, they went out of their way, to the point of being annoying, to not provide much specific information until recently.

Silver Spring may be part of the practice solution moving forward but so will some of the outside options. We'll all know in advance of committing to another year agreement this August so you'll be able to decide then, with all the information, as to whether or not the new agreement works for your family.

Personally, I'd be fine if Silver Spring wasn't used at all since the parking is horrible and the traffic worse but I realize that it may be part of the mix and will make my decision based on the specific actual details when they become available.

+1

Silver Spring doesn't work for us at all(North Potomac) so I too hope it's not used - Old Farm, JCC, Gaithersburg, Mont. College and even Glenmont are much better and if I hazard to guess, would be much better for the majority of the KSAC families.

And, a lot of those places don’t work for families downcounty. Not everyone lives in Rockville or Gaithersburg.

I would say that most KSAC swimmers like in Bethesda, Rockville, Potomac, or Kensington. Off the top of my head in the top 3 groups at KSAC I can name 1 kid who lives down county out of 90.

This is true from what I've observed as well(KSAC family).

MLK seems to be the prevailing choice for many downcounty, much more than KSAC.

It’s not just about the top swimmers. Those kids can probably move locations. It’s the rest of ours who cannot.

Yes, that's the "as is" state.... in fact, the Glenmont current "as is" would be summer swim only as it has been for years(RMSC Olney uses this pool for some practices in the summer).

They are scheduled to have system upgraded and heaters added at which point year round is an option. The bathrooms are also scheduled to be enclosed and heated so winter is doable.

I’m pretty sure RMSC cares more about their top swimmers, so it’s to their benefit to temporarily relocate the KSAC groups to locations that work best for the majority of their high level swimmers. I’m sure the club/coaches and the families would prefer to keep the high level groups together instead of allowing some swimmers to move to other sites. Sorry, but it is what it is.

Right, so what you end up with is maybe 20% of the KSAC swimmers being more convenient to Silver Spring. That’s probably part of the reason why Silver Spring is being walked back as an option.

MLK is not terrible for anyone who is truly downcounty.

Nope, but we're all hoping that it's sooner rather than later so that we can make arrangements (e.g. possible tryouts with other clubs). The pool is scheduled to be shutdown June 28th so hopefully it is well before that.

Anonymous wrote:NP, not part of RMSC just curious as someone looking to switch clubs: Have they told you when they will let you know?

Not yet. And they only need a partial solution for now to get them 1 month past when it closes on Jun 28th. So it may not be until August when we would commit to another agreement and pay that we know the full solution for 24-25.

Also, I would say if you want to switch near-term, your best option would be one of the other sites. KSAC is keeping the numbers lean for this transition due to the uncertainty of what the available lane space will be(per swimmer). Unless your DC is really a standout, of course, they would obviously make room.

KSAC family here. I wonder how this change will impact the KSAC yearly fees. Will RMSC have a higher KSAC-specific fees if that they’re having to rent expensive pool space? Or will they spread out the extra cost amongst all RMSC swimmers to soften the blow?

Lets hope for this but that they aren't transparent about it so as to not rock the boat/ruffle feathers.

Non-KSAC RMSC family here. Are a lot of KSAC families requesting site transfer tryouts at this point? Seems like it would make more sense for those who can't absorb the uncertainty in the planning (as I think most busy families can't!).
