UVA mass shooting

Senseless and sad beyond words. The pictures of the victims - so full of life and looking so happy, on the cusp of so many things. Sickening really.

It was one of 4 mass shootings in America yesterday. There were 5 the day before. How much did you hear about the other 8?

It’s trending on Twitter.

Not true. This is everywhere. Our two college students at different schools say this is all everyone is talking about today. No idea how their families and friends get through this.

Agreed. Also, while people are talking about it, there hasn't been any new information since the 11am briefing, so it will die down at least a little bit while awaiting new information.

If we do not act to stop it, we are allowing it to go on.

Then take action. Become a police officer so you can put down these fools. Become a mental health counselor. Become a violence interruptor. Change our culture so that people have stronger bonds to each other and the community.

No, I intend to advocate for gun control.

Doesn't sound like action + waste of time

‘Cause that’s worked so well already.

We don't know.

I think it sounded like:
Suspect was accused of hazing, but chief mentioned people not coming forward to report, so perhaps no formal charges, but I bet team thought just a lot simpler to boot him off the team (he never played a game).
There was also a more recent report about him having a gun, which brought hom to attention of some kind of Threat Assessment Group.
It's going to get ugly as media digs in and unearths all the facts about this individual.

I have an alternate theory, given that he was only a first year and only played one year, could he have been the one who was hazed? And that no one was ever found responsible leading to this anger?

I find it crazy that UVA didn't learn from the hazing football scandal of 2016. I mean, just 2 or 3 short years later and another incident that has possibly led to 3 deaths?

You can go to a college for more than 4 years. 5 or 6 year graduation is not rare at all.
It can be even longer.

So a football player killed three other football players.
Looks like a targetted mass shooting.

UVA is very protective of their four year graduation rate. It would be rare for someone to take longer than foe years.

Not anymore. My kid at UVA (in her 2nd year) has several friends who are in their 5th and 6th undergrad years. There's much less push and pressure put on them to graduate in 4 years. Mental health is more important than it used to be.

And COVID changed things.

I coulnd't even find it on the WP home page right now. The murder of these three amazing men is like 3/4 of the way down the page, past "how to prevent pickleball injuries." ENRAGING
