Private School Lacrosse Thread

Anonymous
My son played lacrosse for his freshman year after playing rec during middle school. He met some kids on the team, but for the most part, he says kids who play this sport are "jerks." I can see that these kids probably get this trait from their parents based on some of the posts on this thread. I am glad he has chosen not to pursue this sport this year because he just can't seem to connect with the culture, which seems to be that of privilege and, to put it bluntly, just acting like a$$holes.

that previous post is only 25% true...

There are "jerks" who play football, tennis, water polo, etc...

Lacrosse used to be fun. Now it's infested with helicopter parents. Kids used to have a life outside organized programs. Just stupid.

Um, you do understand how this works, PP, don't you? Each time there is a post the thread moves back to the top of the list. When it moves to the top of the list people like me come to see what someone has posted. We find your dorky post and sigh but the view count keeps us coming back. If you really, truly want this thread to be removed you should be able to deduce that one way to do that would be to limit the number of posts. That would include limiting your own posts.

Or, you can think of it another way...since your continued posts about deleting this thread have been seen but not responded to you might conclude that while you don't find value in the thread others do. In which case, you should just move on!

Either way, there is a theme. I hope you get it!

There isn't a need to shell out $2000 a year on a 3rd grader when an athletic seventh grader can be at the same level of play by 8th grade as the kid who has been playing club ball since 3rd.

Exactly.

But people are unlikely to understand this as all these clubs and camps show.

Want to develop a good lacrosse player? Start with a lot of basketball.

I agree with both PPs to some extent. While I have seen quite a few of the superstars on my kids under 10 teams fade away to be usurped by tweens and teens with different skills, there is something to be said for playing a sport, any sport, and multiple sports.

It is hard for a 13 year-old to walk onto a field and to be competitive (in any sport, lax included) if he hasn't had an opportunity to develop skills in teamwork and field/court sense. Playing multiple sports, like basketball or soccer or baseball, make sense. Even tennis can be an option although it doesn't help too much with teamwork. The key is to develop field and court sense so that the player is in the game and positioning to be proactive rather than reactive.

Additionally, the boy who is watching games on tv or from the stands can relate more to what he sees happening on the field if he has BTDT. It is one thing to listen to a commentator (or your dad) talking about going to X and a completely another when you are the guy with the ball trying to get there. It is why we make kids practice driving for 6 months before they get their license and don't just let them play a driving game on the computer.

DELETE THIS THREAD. IT BELONGS ON THE SPORTS FORUM, NOT THIS ONE.

I used to be against this suggestion but I am agreement now. The thread needs to be in an area where there is a sports focus. It has become out of control.

You might not like the fact that this thread is getting a lot of views and posts. Not sure why.

But if you want to kill the discourse on this issue, do just that, move it to the Sports Forum, where lacrosse threads go to die.

Exhibit A.

Moved from Private School forum to Sports Forum. A single post in 2017.

Anyone else get the email about the formation of the Maryland Hawks - high school club lax starting with the 2021 class. They are part of the Annapolis Hawks and Hogan Lax family and will be in partnership with Coach Falatko from Club Blue and Georgetown Prep. They will be holding tryouts in Bethesda this month for a September start. Thoughts? How will they stand up to DC Express and Madlax?
