Oh COME ON.

OP, why were you sleeping in the same room as your hosts?

Did they invite you, or did you invite yourself?

Are they...swingers? Do they live in a studio? Are they much younger than you?

I really want to know this story.

OP come back! Why were you guys sharing a bedroom. Is this a studio apartment? A swinger thing?

Now there’s a theory that hot-flashing SIL is in the wrong for cranking the thermostat down in HER OWN HOUSE?

No. Just no. Maybe you should have been co-sleeping the way the Good Lord intended.

So the Good Lord intended to babies to die from parents rolling on them and blankets to suffocate them. Wow.

So...tell her not to do it?

Or, better yet, just turn it down so your guest will be comfortable and then add a blanket or two on your own bed.

All evidence suggests that the Good Lord doesn’t value individual babies the way their parents do.

But: gotcha.

My MIL does this. Waits until we go to bed and jacks it up to 75. We keep it below 70 at night. I have hot flashes and my husband sleeps hot. I get so angry. Their house is hideously hot when we visit but I would never touch their thermostat. It’s their house, if they want it to be 77, their prerogative.

Totally understand that you don't want her touching your thermostat. BUT, you need to be a better hostess. If your guests are cold (remember that older people have a hard time with homeostasis/temperature regulation) and supply her with an electric blanket that she can control. You are going through hot flashes, so don't assume that everyone else will need the same temperature as you. Some kindness, please.

I’m perfectly kind to my MIL. I’ve known her since she was in her late 40s. She has done this long before I was menopausal and long before anyone would consider her old. We provide plenty of blankets. It’s never enough. She even needs her head to be at 75+ at all times. Going to their house is like sleeping in the dessert. So we get a hotel because it’s so hot. They should do the same, not jack the thermostat in someone else’s house to 75 degrees at night! We don’t keep our house that high durn the day even, so wasteful.

I can’t even imagine how hot I would be, we keep our thermostat to 60 at night!

Don’t ever touch someone’s thermostat. So rude. Were you raised in a barn?

Sleep physicians recommend the coldest temperature you can stand for sleeping; 58-62 is ideal. You’re in bed under the covers, why does the whole damned house need to be cranked up to 70+?! If you get up in the night, put on a bathrobe. Set the thermostat to warm up to 70+ 1/2 hour before waking time (no, it does not use more energy).

People who want their home summer temperature all year round - even their massive McMansions with dozens of empty rooms - are disgusting energy hogs.

+1
And: I can't imagine sharing a bedroom with a host (except maybe with my sister, but of course not with her DH)!
