In almost every state , there is a 2 yr time limit for welfare benefits. DC doesn’t have this limit by choice. |
We used to...I believe it was TANF? Who got rid of it? Yes, it was motivating. I worked in a jobs program in DC and people were motivated due to the cut off to get job skills. |

I am a little confused by the Mayors Act NOW bill and Pintos Secure DC Bill. Whose is better? Are these competing bills? I am calling Frumin's Office again today--should I urge support of BOTH bills?
More nitty-gritty--when they come up for vote? How many do they need to pass? Any CouncilMember that we should apply particular pressure to (ie 'swing-vote')? |
Impeach Bowser. Impeach the council. Impeach Biden. Impeach Trump. Impeach crime. Impeach God. |
Clearly those vicious elementary school teachers must have provoked the poor assailant. How dare they just walk around with their kindergarten class in broad daylight! Thank god the councilman is looking into additional free money and support for the poor violent criminal. I also hope those evil teachers are placed on administrative leave pending a thorough investigation as well as much-needed sensitivity training. |
Completely agree although to be fair, some dems are much worse than others. I miss Mary Cheh already. Frumin, this far, is a major disappointment |
Yes but please note the kids were TODDLERS! Not elementary school, not kindergartners. You know the precious little kids that you see walking around the city in groups, holding onto a rope to keep them together. THOSE TODDLERS witnessed this. |
+1 |
This sounds like Council Nadeau! Are you Brianne Nadeau? Don't be shy |
Frumin was always going to be a disappointment. So was JLG. I cannot believe people fell for it. You can go back to threads from 2020 and 2022 which had plenty of people insisting that neither of them were going to take crime seriously and we'd end up worse off. And here we are! People keep complaining about the council but it's the absolutely idiotic voters of this city that got us here. |
The only people who voted for him were his neighbors. All of the rest of his votes were the product of an orchestrated campaign to vote against Goulet. You can in part blame Mary Cheh for Frumin, because her reluctant endorsement is probably what took him over the top for many people who instinctively didn’t support him because he is so obviously wishy washy. The tip-off for JLG is her accepting proudly accepting the DSA endorsement. She’s been clear about who she is from the get go. |

All I know is my frustration rises when I repeatedly seeing crickets from some DC leaders when violent crime occurs and impacts minority populations, then outspoken vocal and vehement anger at any crime bill to address it.
Sure, police response needs to be fair and legal, but it is incredibly clear that some leaders do not want to do ANYTHING at all to curb crime other than whine at every proposed solution while offering no alternatives. Sure, social determinants of crime matter, but that's a LONG term solution and addressing that shouldn't also shouldn't mean you stay silent about the need to ALSO hold violent criminals accountable, prosecute them, and keep them in jail, and figure out how to curb the current crisis (and YES, it's a crisis!). |

A humongous gap (or opportunity) in DC's ability to address youth crime is better addressing truancy. They are not doing nearly enough to figure this out. If my kid is not in school and I didn't send the school a notice that they are out for whatever reason, the school should be contacting me repeatedly. If this occurs for multiple days in a row, "no call no shows" then a welfare check needs to be initiated and parents should be held accountable.
The flip side of this is DC doesn't adequately classify truancy. My kid is an "unexcused absence" if I notify the school that they are out, but do not get a doctor's note. Obviously parents don't take their kids to the doctor for every illness. However, this is essentially classified the same as what I would call "no call no show" where the student doesn't show up and the parent never notified the school. These should be different!!! DC Crime Facts on Twitter has been doing a great job of compiling statistics on truancy and other crime issues such as arrest and prosecution rates over time and compared to other cities, but frankly, I am not seeing local DC news pick up on their fantastic, data-driven posts. I am not on twitter as much anymore, but their account is one I routinely check and encourages others to as well. I really wish that DC reporters would start following that account for news story ideas. |
+1 Our elected officials get much angrier about crime legislation than actual crimes. |
THIS!!! And every time my blood boils more and I just want to vote them all out! The angriest voices are ONLY angry at crime reduction legislation and NEVER ANGRY AT THE ACTUAL CRIME, NEVER ANGRY ON BEHALF OF THE VICTIMS!!!!! Except if the victims are dogs, apparently that elicits an angrier response than people being robbed and shot on a daily basis. |
