The flip side of this is DC doesn't adequately classify truancy. My kid is an "unexcused absence" if I notify the school that they are out, but do not get a doctor's note. Obviously parents don't take their kids to the doctor for every illness. However, this is essentially classified the same as what I would call "no call no show" where the student doesn't show up and the parent never notified the school. These should be different!!!

DC Crime Facts on Twitter has been doing a great job of compiling statistics on truancy and other crime issues such as arrest and prosecution rates over time and compared to other cities, but frankly, I am not seeing local DC news pick up on their fantastic, data-driven posts. I am not on twitter as much anymore, but their account is one I routinely check and encourages others to as well. I really wish that DC reporters would start following that account for news story ideas.
